Chinese Brush Painting is the foundation of all oriental brush arts. Painting in China is a way of life – and as such, it hails from the philosophies of Taoism and Confucianism. Nature and its grandeur is appreciated for its intangible spirituality.
In this beginner’s workshop, you will start by calming your spirit, thinking, and meditating about how you will paint the essence of your subject. Preparing yourself to paint, you will use “The Four Treasures”- brush, ink stick, ink stone, and rice paper- that have defined this art form for thousands of years.
You will find that Chinese Brush Painting is an enlightening practice in embracing change.
You will gain an overview of the history, philosophy, and aesthetic concepts, understand the proper selection, care, preparation, and use of traditional materials, and perform the basic skills and techniques for brush strokes.
Learn the basics of Chinese Brush Painting through hands-on instruction, complete compositions, handouts, and discussion. Mastery of the brush empowers artists of any medium.
Students will compose a Spring Orchid that they learned during this workshop.
Note: Wear comfortable clothing. India ink is permanent, be careful so that you do not ruin your clothes.

Hsieh-I and Po Mo style is the spontaneous style of Chinese Brush Painting, which means “to depict an idea.” Executed in a lively, simple, and speedy manner, one expresses the spirit and essence of a subject rather than its realistic detail. Morean Glass Studio

Watch, learn and participate in your very own sculpted pumpkin making experience in the Morean Glass Studio &amp; Hot Shop!
Gather a group of friends and sign up together or register on your own. Limited to 10 people per night, this event runs from 6pm-9pm, with each participant given enough one-on-one time with a professional glass artist to create their very own pumpkin.
Choose your own colors, lay out the colored&nbsp;frit&nbsp;(granulated glass) in the desired pattern on the&nbsp;marver&nbsp;(flat steel surface). Then, with the assistance of a professional&nbsp;gaffer (glassblower) gather up molten glass, apply the color, then heat, shape, and sculpt the stem.
Proper Dress: Non-flammable clothing, long pants, closed-toed shoes.&nbsp;
&nbsp;*Note* Glass works need to cool for 48 hours before they are able to be taken home. Pick up available Wednesday through Sunday. Please keep this in mind when scheduling.&nbsp;

This touring exhibition brings long-overdue attention to Georgia’s vibrant woodfiring tradition. The Contemporary Woodfire Potters of Georgia exhibition showcases a multigenerational collective of artists whose practices span folk pottery lineages, Japanese kilntraditions, and contemporary ceramic artistry—united by a shared devotion to the centuries-old craft of woodfiring. The group includes some of the most influential names in Southern pottery, among them legacy potters with more than 30 years of firing experience such as Roger Jamison, Geoff Pickett, Jon Brinley, and Allen Gee, as well as studio innovators including Stephen Hawks, and Ron Meyers. Equally central to the movement are the next generation of fire chiefs and apprentices—Rebecca Wood, Kyle Jones, and Liz Bloodgood—and a rising cohort of nationally recognized ceramic artists including , Linda Suskin, Kimberly Shelton and Joel Huff.

After retiring in 2014 Nick and his wife Shelly opened an art studio in the Old Southeast Neighborhood of St. Petersburg where Shelly is a ceramicist and Nick is a woodworker concentrating on woodturning and carving. Nick has been an assistant instructor at Arrowmont School of the Arts in Gatlinburg TN, as well as instructing in his studio.

Sake Block is a cultural festival celebrating the craftsmanship, traditions, and community surrounding Japanese sake. Held on World Sake Day, the event brings together premium sake producers, ceramic artists, chefs, musicians, and makers for an evening of discovery at the Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg, Florida.&nbsp;
Guests can explore a curated selection of sake from some of the country’s leading importers, breweries, and distributors while meeting the people behind each bottle—including a few visiting Japanese brewers and industry professionals. Throughout the evening, attendees are invited to browse a marketplace of vinyl record vendors and ceramic artist booths, enjoy local food pop-ups, purchase bottles to take home, and experience live music that evolves from an intimate jazz trio to an energetic DJ set, inspired by Japanese listening bars.
For those looking to dive deeper, optional workshops offer a hands-on introduction to Japanese culture through a Private Sake 101 Tasting, Raku Pottery Firing, and Gyotaku Fish Printing, creating opportunities to learn, create, and connect beyond the tasting.

Shapeshifter: New and Select Works by Palehorse is the distillation of 20 years of work by St. Petersburg based, multidisciplinary artist Chris Parks, and a glimpse into a new body of work that reveals his continued metamorphosis.
Shapeshifter traces the arc of a commercial illustrator who has worked with some of the world’s top brands, bands and cultural icons, and a studio artist and muralist who sees his personal work as a vehicle for sacred connection. In this new collection, Palehorse channels the transformative power of gods, guardians and totems to offer a mirror to the self, weaving together archetypes, sigils, symbols and sacred geometry.
In a retrospective spanning two decades of dedicated practice, Palehorse presents his creative journey through rock poster art, skateboard graphics, wrestling lore and apparel design, reimagined in new ways. He also explores long-imagined collaborations with friends such as Ben Venom, Morning Breath Inc, Masked Republic, Jon Stine and Bryan Nichols, whose influence has been enduring and foundational.
Shapeshifter is a continuum of becoming, a practice of reflection and an expression of gratitude.
About Palehorse
Palehorse is a traditional and digital artist known for his meticulous linework, vivid color palettes, and layered symbolic language. His work spans large-scale murals, gallery installations, identity and branding, print design and apparel.
His artwork has been commissioned by global brands including National Geographic, Nike, FX, Under Armour, PepsiCo and Hasbro, and exhibited in galleries internationally including the renowned Dalí Museum. He has also designed officially licensed posters for artists such as Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Jimi Hendrix and Rush.
Beyond the studio, Palehorse’s work extends into public spaces and popular culture, from co-founding the SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival to creating masked professional wrestling personas appearing in AEW and CMLL. His current practice focuses on personal studio work, an original line of clothing and products, and Kriya Yoga. He also leads Seekers of the Eternal, a weekly meditation circle.

Since 2001, he has worked alongside his wife and artistic collaborator, Cristina Williams, whose talents in painting, sculpture, and decorative surface design have expanded their creative practice into a true partnership. Together, their work merges technical mastery with imaginative storytelling, resulting in pieces that are both functional and expressive.
A Change of Seasons marks a deeply personal milestone for the artists, a celebration of 35 years of working in clay and a reflection on an evolving creative journey. While pottery remains at the heart of their practice, this exhibition represents a shift toward new artistic horizons, bringing painting to the forefront alongside a selection of special ceramic works. The exhibition highlights the intersection of these two disciplines, exploring transformation, collaboration, and the ways artistic passions continue to grow and change over time.
Inspired by a lifelong love of autumn, pumpkins, and Halloween imagery, the exhibition embraces the symbolism of seasonal change. Visitors will encounter whimsical and thoughtfully crafted works that celebrate the artists’ shared history, creative partnership, and enduring connection to clay. Learn the basics of Chinese Brush Painting through hands-on instruction, complete compositions, handouts, and discussion. Mastery of the brush empowers artists of any medium.
Students will compose a plum blossom that they learned during this workshop.
Note: Wear comfortable clothing. India ink is permanent, be careful so that you do not ruin your clothes.
What makes Chinese Brush Painting unique?
Hsieh-I and Po Mo style is the spontaneous style of Chinese Brush Painting, which means “to depict an idea.” Executed in a lively, simple, and speedy manner, one expresses the spirit and essence of a subject rather than its realistic detail. The artist is at one with the subject, and the painting is a medium for self-expression and self-discovery.

The Winter Wood Symposium is back at the Morean Center for Clay! We’re sending 2026 off in a blaze of fire this December, so join us for an unforgettable week of clay and camaraderie.
Natural fiber clothing and closed-toed shoes are required. No plastic!
Gloves, glaze, and wadding are provided. Every participant must signup for at least one shift during the course of the firing.&nbsp; Our firing leads will be giving lectures throughout the week, so bring a notebook and a pen!&nbsp;
All participants will need to bring cone 10 bisque work to this event. Between 12 and 15 cubic feet of work is recommended. This is a great opportunity to fire large pieces. Tall pieces are highly encouraged! Dates and times for artist talks will be emailed out to participants as the symposium approaches.
Pull something out of the fire that you gotta show off? Submit your piece for our Woodfire Symposium Exhibition in January 2027. Include the piece’s title, the price/NFS (not for sale), and which kiln you fired it in. Paperwork will be provided after unloading.
