The San Geronimo Valley Community Center’s International Day of Peace Festival&nbsp;weekend begins with a special screening of the documentary feature Healing Through Hula, presented by the San Quentin Film Festival. The film sets the tone for a weekend dedicated to exploring the many pathways to peace.
Directed by Louis Sále, Healing Through Hula tells the powerful story of Asian American and Pacific Islander men in prison who reconnect with their cultural heritage through the practice of hula. Drawing from his own lived experience, Sále chronicles a journey of healing and redemption that culminates in a moving Makahiki ceremonial ritual. The original 10-minute version of the film was first screened at the inaugural San Quentin Film Festival (SQFF) in 2024, where it received the award for Best Documentary Short. The evening program will include two additional short films: Processing, a SQFF25 Short Film Finalist, directed by formerly incarcerated filmmaker, artist and musician Antwan Banks Williams and Exonerated, directed by incarcerated filmmaker Ernest “Ben Shua”Woods II.
Following the film, attendees are invited to stay for a panel discussion featuring director Antwan Williams and Demora Henderson, the subject of Exonerated, who was released in June and continues the struggle to overturn his wrongful conviction. The conversation will be moderated by the Community Center’s own Alexa Davidson.
Prior to the screening, at 5:30pm guests are invited to enjoy a reception where the Lagunitas Middle School eighth-grade class will offer refreshments as a fundraiser for their Spring 2027 Civil Rights Field Trip.

Join Sophia Luce&nbsp; for a relaxing and restorative Community Crystal Bowl Sound Bath in our courtyard on Saturday September 19 at 6:00pm.&nbsp;
The event will begin with 15 minutes of gentle movement to release tension, awaken the body, and prepare for deep relaxation. Next, participants will enjoy a 45-minute sound bath as the soothing vibrations of crystal singing bowls promote calm, balance, and renewal. The Sound Bath will close with 10–15 minutes to unwind, connect with others. Whether you’re new to the practice or a returning participant, this experience offers a welcoming space to relax, reset, and leave feeling centered and refreshed.
Bring your yoga mats, pads, blankets for your comfort. There will be chairs for those who prefer to sit.&nbsp;
Sound Bath begins Promptly at 6:00pm, please arrive early to get situated in the Courtyard.

San Geronimo Valley Community Center's Peace Fest presents a Community Crystal Bowl Sound Bath 

The festivities begin at 2 p.m. with a ceremonial blessing by Henry Frank, whose wisdom and presence have become a treasured Peace Fest tradition. Visitors can also experience Henry Frank: A Human Experience in the West Room, while the Valley Room will feature artwork from the William James Association’s Prison Arts Project.
Outside, students from Lagunitas School will exhibit peace-inspired artwork created following Ashanti Branch’s Taking Off the Mask workshop. Through interactive activities and thoughtful conversation, students explore identity, empathy, and authentic connection, expressing both their inner and outer selves through art. Also, outside near the Courtyard the GreenStitch Climate Action interns will once again create one of their vibrant community chalk murals, illustrating the connection between climate protection and world peace.
Following the blessing, we are excited to present all the way from Paraquay, Orquestra de Reciclados de Cateura, an internationally acclaimed youth ensemble from Paraguay whose musicians perform on instruments handcrafted from recycled materials recovered from a landfill. The instruments played by the orchestra members mimic violins, violas, cellos, double basses, guitars, flutes, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and percussion instruments, yet they are constructed from refuse. Their repertoire includes classical, folk, Paraguayan, and Latin American music, as well as songs by the Beatles and Frank Sinatra, among others. Their inspiring story of resilience, creativity, and hope beautifully reflects the spirit of Peace Fest.
Peace Fest will then welcome Enriching Lives Through Music (ELM) for the first time. The youth music education program provides young people with immersive musical experiences, mentorship, and the resources to pursue their artistic dreams. Their talented young performers promise to bring energy, enthusiasm, and inspiration to the afternoon.
Closing this year’s festival is featured headliner AgapéSoul, led by bassist, songwriter, and producer Darryl Anders.Blending soul, funk, jazz, and R&amp;B, AgapéSoul delivers uplifting performances centered on hope, healing, and connection. Anders has performed with the legendary Tower of Power and toured and recorded with Meters drummer Zigaboo Modeliste, bringing decades of musical experience to the Peace Fest stage.
As Anders describes it, “The name AgapéSoul comes from the Greek word Agape—meaning God’s unconditional love—and Soul, the place within us where music comes from. It also reflects the style of music I feel connected to. As an artist, I feel it’s important to speak on issues that are crucial to the healing of our society.”

On Sunday, September 27, the San Geronimo Valley Community Center is excited to welcome home Valley native Josh Witt to host the very first Swingin’ in the Valley!&nbsp; The community dance kicks off at 5pm at the Woodacre Improvement Club.
A performing musician, bandleader, and San Geronimo Valley favorite, Josh first took the stage at the Community Center during the 2005 St. Patrick’s Day Talent Show. Since then, he has earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Berklee College of Music, spent nearly a decade performing in Boston, and now leads his own swing, rock ‘n’ roll, and doo-wop band, Josh and the Wittness (pun very much intended). More recently, Josh began hosting community swing dance events while also dipping his toes into becoming an instructor. He is excited to bring all these new explorations and talents back to his hometown.
The evening begins with a one-hour beginner-friendly swing dance lesson led by Josh. No experience or partner is necessary—participants will learn the basics of Lindy Hop and gain the confidence to enjoy the dance floor throughout the night.
Following the lesson, guests will dance to two one-hour live music sets, with a 15-minute intermission between them. At the end of the break, Josh will lead everyone in the Shim Sham, the iconic three-minute Lindy Hop line dance that originated in the tap dancing tradition and has become a beloved swing dance classic.
Whether you plan to dance all night or simply enjoy the music and lively atmosphere, everyone is welcome. Perimeter seating will be available for guests who prefer to watch rather than dance. Beer / Wine / N/A Drinks and Light Refreshments will be available.
Swingin’ in the Valley also offers the perfect opportunity to dust off your dancing shoes before the Community Center’s Heart of the Valley Benefit on Saturday, October 10, featuring live music by Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys.

The Struggle for Mother Water explores the many disturbing dimensions of the global water crisis, how women worldwide are leading the fight to protect and defend water, for their families, their communities, for all of creation.
Over the course of 219 days, traveling to 21 countries, filmmaker Michael Zelniker platforms the stories of those on the frontlines, uplifting those whose voices too often go unheard.
After premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival, it then screened at the Taormina Film Festival where Zelniker was recognized with a Special Sustainability Award.
The Lark Theater will be hosting a special screening of Episodes 1 &amp; 6 of the 8-part docuseries on August 30th during which time Zelniker will be in attendance, discussing his work on the documentary along with sharing information about the Mother Water Fund, the 501c3 charitable organization, that was inspired by the making of The Struggle for Mother Water.
