Breakfast University is a morning series at Chappaqua Performing Arts Center that features a fascinating talk with a remarkable professor, a light breakfast and the most interesting people in Westchester!
Our February event features Anna Celenza discussing how some music does not simply reflect culture…it changes it. She'll highlight four musical masterpieces including a bawdy 18th-century drinking tune that eventually defined American patriotism, a 1930s ballad that fueled the need for the Civil Rights movement, a 1980s pop album that changed American foreign policy, and a 2016 smash Broadway musical soundtrack that re-educated an entire generation about the Founding Fathers.
Anna Celenza is a professor at Johns Hopkins University, where she holds a joint appointment in the Musicology Department. She is the author of eight award-winning books for both children and adults, including her newest, On the Record: Music that Changed America.

It has been estimated that some 40 percent of Americans have at least one ancestor who entered through Ellis Island – the total is more than 12 million. Today it is one of the nation’s most popular historical landmarks and a symbol of the American immigration experience. This lecture will move beyond the myths and nostalgia that sometimes cloud our understanding of this important historical site and give a behind-the-scenes historical look at the operations of Ellis Island during its heyday in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Professor Cannato will discuss the types of immigrants who passed through Ellis Island and describe the process of inspection they encountered there. In our own time, immigration has once again become a hot-button issue. This lecture will give participants much-needed historical perspective in understanding how America dealt with mass immigration in the past. Vincent Cannato is a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he teaches courses on 20th century American history, urban history, immigration history, and baseball history. He is the author of American Passage: The History of Ellis Island and has also written for numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.

This seminar examines how we think about power and influence in international politics. We will consider traditional answers based on military might and examine how globalization, technology, ideology, and economic interdependence are changing the ways we should think about power and influence. After engaging in an analysis of power and influence in today’s world, the participants will consider 5 particular individuals—some expected, others perhaps unexpected or even unknown—who are calling the shots in global affairs today. We’ll conclude with a detailed look at what their influence means for our global future.
