Join us for a talk with author Peggy Levitt!
Most people agree that the world benefits when a broad range of art and literature is represented in our classrooms, libraries, and museums. Why, then, do we still value culture and ideas produced in the West more than what is created by the “Rest”? In her new book, Move Over, Mona Lisa: Reimagining What We Read, Look at, and Learn, Peggy Levitt describes the inequality pipeline that keeps artists, writers, and thinkers from getting their fair share, as well as the remarkable people who are working to dismantle it.
Peggy is Chair and Professor of Sociology and the Mildred Lane Kemper Chair of Sociology at Wellesley College. She is also a co-founder of the Global (De)Centre.RSVP HEREKerem Shalom is a vibrant, diverse, and welcoming Jewish community where tradition and innovation are celebrated. The Concord Orchestra presents “Dancing in Disguise” at 8:00pm on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18 at 2:30pm at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden. The orchestra, conducted by Music Director Zeke Fetrow, performs music by Anna Clyne, Garbriel Fauré, and Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
Clyne’s short composition, Masquerade (2013), was inspired by pleasure gardens in London in the 18th century, where people gathered in the summer to experience masquerade balls, fireworks, and performances of music, dance, acrobatics, and theater.
The four movements of Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande Suite were selected from incidental music he composed for a play. The Sicilienne movement is one of Fauré’s most easily recognized and best-loved works.
Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3 “Polish” gets its nickname from the polonaise rhythm in its finale. It was written slightly before Swan Lake, and contains some similar musical themes and delightful dance rhythms.
Two of the acts of famous choreographer George Balanchine’s Jewels (1967), a ballet in three acts with each act representing a gemstone, are set to music from Pelléas and Mélisande
(Emeralds) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3 (Diamonds).
Tickets for adults and seniors are $25. Admission for youth under 18 is free. For tickets and information, call 978-369-4967 or visit concordorchestra.com.
