Tuesday, October 20 and Tuesday, October 27, 11 am to 1:30 pmThis fun and fast-paced introductory class meets on two Tuesdays, October 20 and 27, 11 am to 1:30 pm - you must attend both sessions.Bam, Crack, Dot, Dragons, and Flowers: join Kim Nash for help demystifying this game and its quirky lingo, and learn just how much fun it can be! Mah Jongg is a tile game that originated in China in the mid-1800s and came to the US in the 1920s. The goal is to be the first to get a winning 14-tile sequence or "Mah Jongg". Sounds simple? Sort of, and yet complicated enough to keep you wanting to play again and again. We will follow standardized rules created by the National Mah Jongg League (NMLJ) formed in 1937. The two sessions are interactive and fun! There's a lot of upfront information to understand the tiles and National Mah Jongg League Card to get you up and playing.First session: Instruction from the very basics - the tiles, reading the NMJL card, picking a hand, and how to deal. We will end with an open-hand game.Second session: Refresh on the basics and then jump into coached play with additional focus on strategy.Kim will have 2026 NMJL cards available for use during the class. To continue playing after the class, you may buy a card directly from the National Mah Jongg League or from Kim.$294.95.Presented by Marin Art and Garden Center.

Join us to savor the poetry of the season, in this free gathering hosted by Jayne McPherson.Gardens have an essential and ubiquitous place in lyric poetry. The great poet Kahlil Gibran called friendship a garden, one where planted seeds are sown "with love and reap thanksgiving."During this season, let's follow his poetic lead and look up at distant mountains that frame the lazy lady on the horizon. Let's remind ourselves of the middle pond's pink and white lotus blossoms-that they float night and day under the sun or moonlight. Let's notice how the water fountain's splash undulates in ringlets; how, inside the iron gate, blossoms protrude as promises kept in heirloom roses; how a giving-tree oak allows another woodpecker or squirrel to sneak substance and nest.Haiku offers beauty in form and empathy. And like a harvest, it can evoke awe or perhaps simply ahhh. When we seek pause in the natural world, we may remember our breath and breathe more deeply. We may tune in, feel our heartbeat, sense a door opening as we pause before a sunning lizard or grazing deer.Writing haiku is a quiet way to savor these Garden gifts. This is our third anniversary writing circle and will feature haikuist, David Watts. His poetry has been published widely. It includes two books, Dream Tree & Seed Kites.David Watts is recognized by Haiku Poets of Northern California. For all ages, this simple yet focused writing has benefits beyond the page, including increased sense of purpose, appreciation and respect for nature's contribution to our well-being. Writing is rewarding but haiku writing is the toast of a soiree!Offered to all ages and children under 14 may sign up with an adult. Please bring pen, paper or your preferred writing supplies.FreePresented by Marin Art and Garden Center

2PM: Crawloween Begins
Official check-in locations open for participants to collect their event materials and prepare for the crawl. Groups can start at Mayes Oyster House on Polk Street, Rick & Roxy’s on Lombard Street or Union Street Ale House on Union Street.
Afternoon: Explore the Route
Guests can begin visiting participating bars in the Marina, Russian Hill, Polk Gulch, Union Square and other areas. The early hours are a good time to grab food, meet friends and visit popular stops before the biggest crowds arrive.
Throughout the Event: Drink Specials and Free Entry
Participating venues will offer discounted drinks for Crawloween guests. Ticket holders also receive free entry at included locations, so they can move around the route without paying a separate admission charge at every bar.
Afternoon and Evening: Party Bus Service
The free Pub Crawl Party Bus will connect key sections of the event. Participants can use the shuttle to reach more bars and experience different parts of San Francisco during the crawl.
During the Crawl: Contests and Party Favors
Guests can compete in the Costume Contest and take part in the Find the Gnome Contest. Party favors and entertainment at select locations add to the Halloween atmosphere.
10PM: Official Pub Crawl Ends, but the party is just getting started
The freedom to create a personal route is a major part of Crawloween. This is not a tour where every participant must follow a leader or arrive at each bar at a set time. Guests can choose locations based on music, food, atmosphere or where their friends are gathering. One group may stay near Polk Street, while another moves between Union Street and Lombard Street. The large venue list leaves room for both plans.

Viva La Vida with Excerpts from P1N0CCH10 & Carmilla features new works and a returning Oceánica Ballet autumn tradition.
Act 1 premieres selections from two upcoming story ballets. P1N0CCH10, a retelling of Carlo Collodi's classic tale of Pinocchio, explores humanity, artificial intelligence, and our relationship with the natural world. Carmilla, an adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu's groundbreaking sapphic vampire novella, stages a mysterious masquerade ball.
Act II features the return of Viva La Vida, the original story of Lucio and Lupita in a joyful folklórico-infused tale about transcending loss and the resilience of love, inspired by Día de los Muertos. In this “celebration of life, loved ones and culture,” writes Jocelyn Tong of the Daily Californian, “mythic creatures from the land of the dead … [lead to] twirled scarves and snapped-open fans …in a story of homecoming.” Throughout all three stories, the wisdom of women across time and cultures is amplified.
