The Rhode Island Slave History Medallion's mission is to highlight 
the overlooked histories of Rhode Island's free and enslaved African 
American and Indigenous communities. They produce a very popular Black 
History Walking Tour from Memorial Day weekend until the last Sunday of 
October. Join the tour director in this engaging event which brings the 
walking tour to you! If you have some mobility issues or simply want to 
learn more about how this organization started and the history of 
Newport's dominant role in the institution of slavery, you will enjoy 
this opportunity.&nbsp; &nbsp;
Note: While this program is about the provided walking tour, no 
walking is happening at this event. This event is lecture style.&nbsp;

Margaret Baker has been part of the Newport community for more than 
four decades and brings deep historical knowledge and lived experience 
to her role as a public historian with Rhode Island Slave History 
Medallions (RISHM). A former student at the University of Iowa she 
majored in Literature. She is a dedicated researcher whose work focuses 
on early Black history in Rhode Island and the state’s involvement in 
the transatlantic slave trade. 
 
Margaret joined RISHM in 2019 and contributes to the organization’s 
mission of installing bronze medallions at sites connected to enslaved 
and formerly enslaved individuals. She also serves as Tour Director for 
the Newport Black History Walking Tour, an eight‑stop educational 
experience in Newport’s Historic District. The tour has been widely 
praised by visitors from across the country and continues to foster 
understanding, empathy, and community learning.

About the book:
In the serene town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Lily Webb is deeply 
in love with a charismatic boy, a college-bound quarterback whose 
spectacular athletic talents are matched only by his fierce devotion. 
But their dreams of a life together are cut short when his passionate 
protectiveness leads to an irrevocable choice—one that tears them apart 
and leads Lily down a path of heartbreak from which she may never 
recover. 
Lily already knows the sting of loss, beginning with the death of her 
mother, a tragedy that left deep scars on both her and her gifted 
younger sister, Jane. Jane seeks escape in the abstract world of 
mathematics and quantum mechanics—when she can keep the demons that fuel
 her 
addictions at bay. As the years pass, Lily buries her twin griefs deep 
in her heart, finding solace and a new beginning with Marshall 
Middleton, a renowned ornithologist whose love is as steadfast as the 
migration patterns he studies. Yet the shadows of her past linger. 
When the boy who was once everything to Lily reappears in her life, she struggles with questions 
around that terrible night in high school. Can she reconcile the wild

Laws of Love and Logic explores love’s enduring power and the human 
spirit’s capacity for forgiveness and redemption.
About the author:
Debra Curtis is a retired professor of cultural anthropology at Salve
 Regina University, where she specialized in gender and sexuality. This 
is her first novel. She is the mother of grown-up twin girls and lives 
in Rhode Island with her husband.

Join the Newport Public Library on Wednesday September 23rd at 6pm 
for this engaging author talk with Keith Tavares for his recently 
published book, "An Azorean Family's History," which is both story of 
genealogical research and the history of his Azorean roots both on the 
Island of Faial and then here in the U.S.
About the Author:
Keith Tavares began collecting names, dates, photos, and stories 
about his family when he was a boy, and as genealogical technology 
advanced, so did his research.&nbsp; The result of his research is his new 
book “An Azorean Family’s History : Our Faria and Moitoso Roots.”&nbsp; 
Tavares’ journey explored his ancestors, unearthing the rich history and
 legacy that has shaped his family. His research prompted him to travel 
abroad to mainland Portugal, the Island of Madeira, and the Azores, 
specifically the islands of Sao Miguel and Faial, and helped him 
understand why his ancestors left their homeland for new opportunities 
in the US.
A resident of Newport, Rhode Island, where he was born in the Naval 
Hospital, Keith is a graduate of Boston University, where he majored in 
political science and history. He has worked in higher education and the
 nonprofit sector for most of 30 years, having served as Vice President 
of Institutional Advancement for the large social service agency Child 
and Family in Newport and Middletown, RI. He currently serves as 
Director of Capacity Building for the Rhode Island Foundation in 
Providence, RI, supporting nonprofit organizations throughout the state.

As waves of sound wash over you, many find that&nbsp;tension softens, the mind quiets, and the body naturally returns to a&nbsp;peaceful, balanced baseline. Settle&nbsp;in as drums, bells, and singing bowls open the space and guide you&nbsp;gently inward. The gongs then take you on a transformative&nbsp;journey—vibrational, expansive, and deeply restorative—before chimes and ocean drums&nbsp;welcome you back, played intuitively and created just for you&nbsp;in the moment.
No&nbsp;two gong baths are ever the same. Each experience is shaped by the time&nbsp;of year, celestial rhythms, and the collective energy of those present,&nbsp;allowing the sound to unfold uniquely every time. Participants&nbsp;typically rest lying on their backs on a mat or relax in a comfortable&nbsp;chair. You remain fully clothed; no water is involved.
