About the Performer
Vinny &amp; Ray are one of Connecticut’s premier Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz bands, delivering high-energy salsa, timba, cha-cha, samba, funk, and Latin jazz. Known throughout New York and New England, they have shared the stage with legendary artists including Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, José Alberto, and Grupo Fascinación.
The duo earned the 2004 Independent Music Award for Best Original Latin Song, “Rumba en el Barrio,” and received a 2006 Achievement Award alongside Eddie Palmieri and José Feliciano. Their music has reached international audiences and has been featured by WWE and in the motion picture Knucklehead.
Formerly known as Orquesta Presión, Vinny &amp; Ray have performed extensively across the Northeast and beyond. Their recordings include Only the Beginning and Two of a Kind. Fronted by multi-instrumentalists Vinny and Ray, the eight-piece ensemble continues to captivate audiences with its authentic Afro-Cuban sound.

About the Performer
Steve Davis is widely regarded as one of today’s leading trombonists. He first gained international recognition with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, composing the title track of Blakey’s final album, One For All. Over a distinguished career, Davis has performed and recorded with jazz legends including Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean, Benny Golson, Horace Silver, Roy Hargrove, and the acclaimed collective One For All. He has appeared on nearly 200 recordings, including 20 as a leader.
A Grammy-winning artist, Davis is featured on Chick Corea’s Antidote and composed “Optimism” for the Grammy-winning Christian McBride Big Band release Bringin’ It. His recent album, We See (Smoke Sessions), received widespread critical acclaim.
Over recent years, Davis has been collaborating and performing with his wife and vocalist, Abena Koomson Davis.

About the Performer
Guitarist Paul Bollenback has been an active force in jazz since 1981, performing with an impressive range of artists including Stanley Turrentine, Joey DeFrancesco, Gary Bartz, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Steve Gadd, George Coleman, James Moody, Joe Locke, Herb Ellis, and Terri Lyne Carrington. Renowned for his versatility, he is especially recognized for his influential 20-year association with organ master Joey DeFrancesco.
Bollenback has appeared on more than 90 recordings as a sideman and released 10 albums as a leader. A respected composer, his works have been recorded by Joey DeFrancesco and the JazzTimes Superband. He has also maintained a distinguished career in jazz education, teaching at Columbia University, Queens College, The New School, and the Litchfield Jazz Camp.
His latest recording, Timelines (SteepleChase), featuring Pat Bianchi and Byron Landham, is scheduled for release in fall 2026. He resides in the New York City area.

Join teacher &amp; historian Jeffrey Denman for a book talk exploring Washington’s northern campaigns after 1778, which are often overlooked but demonstrate Washington’s great skill in strategy, logistics, and diplomacy. Jeffrey A. Denman is a retired American history and geography teacher from Brookline Public Schools in Brookline, MA. He has written articles and books dealing with the American Revolution, the Civil War, World War II, and other topics in American history. His latest book is Closing the Ring: George Washington’s War in the North, 1778-1781. Denman is the father of nine children and twenty-two grandchildren as of this writing. An avid outdoorsman, he has climbed several 14,000-foot peaks in Colorado and Mt. St. Helens in Washington, and has enjoyed canoeing on the Upper Missouri River in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark.

Tested by Revolution: From Retreat to Resolve Walking Tour

Join us to discover four Connecticut families: Prince Mortimer of Middletown; Robin Starr of Danbury; Job Lathrop of Norwich; and the three sons of London Wallace of Simsbury. As a genealogist and president of the Alex Breanne Corporation, a non-profit focused on research into the formerly enslaved, John Mills traces how Black men served in the American Revolution while still enslaved—and how, in many cases, they returned home to bondage rather than freedom. Grounded in primary records and descendant-led research, this talk reveals a powerful and often overlooked history of service, sacrifice, and resilience, and challenges us to reconsider what patriotism and liberty truly meant for Black people in Revolutionary-era Connecticut.
About John Mills
John Mills is a trained genealogist and president of the Alex Breanne Corporation, a Connecticut-based non-profit dedicated to unearthing the lesser-known stories of the enslaved. On the morning of September 22, 1776, Nathan Hale was killed by the British for being a spy for the Continental Army. Hale was designated the Connecticut State Hero in 1985. Join Anne Marie Charland, Museum Administrator of the Nathan Hale Homestead, to trace the story of Nathan Hale and the family who shaped him from small town boy to a Revolutionary War hero. Discover Hale’s life growing up on a farm, his time at Yale College, his advocacy for women’s education, and his fateful decision to become an intelligence officer for General Washington.

Anne&nbsp;Marie&nbsp;Charland has been working in the fields of history and tourism for over 20 years.&nbsp; Her career started in marketing and public relations for the Greater Hartford Tourism District and later the Northeast Visitors District. She joined the Connecticut Landmarks team at Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry, CT in 2012 and has been the museum administrator since 2017. She has also curated exhibits, facilitated programs, and been a consultant at museums throughout Connecticut.

History Bites | Nathan Hale & A New England Family on the Cusp of a Revolution

T. H. Breen, professor of American History at the University of Vermont, spotlights a crucial missing piece in the stories we tell about the American Revolution. Across the thirteen colonies, it was ordinary people who became the face of resistance. Without them the Revolution would have failed. Everyday men and women negotiated the revolutionary experience, accepting huge personal sacrifice, setting up daring experiments in self-government, and going to extraordinary lengths to preserve the rule of law.
About T.H. Breen
T.H. Breen is a professor of American History at the University of Vermont and an Early American historian interested in the history of political thought, material culture, and cultural anthropology. A Guggenheim fellow, he has held appointments at the Institute for Advanced Study and the National Humanities Center as well as the Pitt Professorship of American History and Institutions at Cambridge University and the Harmsworth Professorship at Oxford University. He has won several awards for distinguished teaching, including one from the Northwestern Alumni Society. His publications include five monographs, portions of the highly successful undergraduate text, America: Past and Present, and books including Marketplace of Revolution: How Consumer Politics Shaped American Independence, American Patriots: The Revolution of the People, George Washington’s Journey: The President Forges a New Nation, and The Will of the People: The Revolutionary Birth of America. Breen has also served as a special consultant for Colonial Williamsburg. In 2017 he was appointed the John Kluge Professor of American Law and Governance at the Library of Congress. Breen is the founding director of the Chabraja Center for Historical Studies, and has a Ph.D. from Yale.

1776 and Hamilton are two landmark American musicals that dramatize the story of the nation’s founding, created nearly fifty years apart and reflecting very different cultural moments. This talk examines how each work portrays the Revolutionary era, while simultaneously capturing a snapshot of the times in which these shows were written. By comparing their music, characters, and political perspectives, the program explores how changing historical contexts shape the way we tell our national story.
About Michael Langlois
Michael is a dynamic performer, director, lecturer and storyteller with decades of experience on the stage. He has lectured from Connecticut to California on topics ranging from Shakespeare to using one’s passions to create exciting events. Michael has worked with young and old alike, helping them find their voice to tell their own unique stories. As an actor, his credits include the Stage Manager in Our Town; Henry in Henry V; Brutus in Julius Caesar; Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. Michael has directed across New England including at the Hartford Children’s Theatre, Springfield’s Drama Studio, and for the Ashford Youth Theatre where he worked for nearly 20 years as the Artistic Director. Additionally, he worked for over a decade with New London’s Flock Theatre serving as an Associate Artist. There he directed, acted, and taught acting classes. Michael’s directing credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Othello; Lysistrata; Godspell; A Piece of My Heart; Macbeth; The Crucible Antigone; The Taming of the Shrew; The Imaginary Invalid; and The Tempest.

From Liberty to Legacy: Exploring American Ideals in the Musicals 1776 and Hamilton

At least one‑third of the colonial population were neutral during the American Revolution, yet they have rarely featured in narratives that shape our ideas about the conflict. By following a single transatlantic family, the Crugers, historian Travis Glasson puts neutrals—the “nobody men”—at the center of this tumultuous period’s history. Drawing from his new book Nobody Men: Neutrality, Loyalties, and Family in the American Revolution, Travis Glasson, Associate Professor of History at Temple University, will explore the overlooked individuals of the Revolutionary era who fell between patriot and loyalist—highlighting how their choices shaped the Atlantic world.
About Travis Glasson
Travis Glasson is a historian of early America, Britain, the British Empire, and the transnational Atlantic world. He is an Associate Professor in the History Department at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and an Affiliated Faculty member of Temple’s Global Studies Program. He completed his MA and PhD at Columbia University and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and LaSalle Academy in Providence, Rhode Island. Glasson is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has received grants and fellowships from institutions including the Whiting Foundation, the John Carter Brown Library, the Huntington Library, the Harvard University Atlantic Seminar, the American Historical Association, and Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge. His publications include the books, Nobody Men: Neutrality, Loyalties, and Family in the American Revolution (Yale University Press, 2025), Mastering Christianity: Missionary Anglicanism and Slavery in the Atlantic World (Oxford University Press, 2012), and articles in journals including the William and Mary Quarterly and the Journal of British Studies.

Every October, the Fairfield Audubon Society becomes one of Connecticut's most beautiful locations for family portraits. Brilliant fall foliage, peaceful trails, golden light, and rustic boardwalks create the perfect backdrop for authentic family memories.
After photographing families throughout Fairfield County for more than 35 years, I continue returning to the Audubon because it never feels like a traditional photo session. Families laugh, explore, chase colorful leaves, and simply enjoy being together. Those genuine interactions create natural smiles and timeless photographs.
