Milford Arts Council, the MAC

Stephen Bennett is an American finger-style guitarist whose mastery of the harp guitar and lifelong devotion to the sound of guitar strings have earned him international acclaim. A winner of the National Flatpicking Guitar Championship and the 2024 International Finger Style Guitar Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival, Bennett is celebrated for his brilliant technique, expressive compositions, and rare sensitivity. Recognized worldwide as one of the foremost exponents of the harp guitar, he has created a body of work that spans solo recordings, collaborations, and original compositions.
Since his debut, Bennett has performed on stages across North America, Europe, and Asia, drawing praise from critics and audiences alike—hailed as “the Jedi Master of Finger-style Guitar” by the Toronto Finger-Style Guitar Association. His MAC Classical Concert comes at an exciting time: Bennett’s new album is soon to be released, featuring artwork by Bill Allen and graphic design by Sean de Burca, available on CD, streaming platforms, and as a double LP with an exclusive bonus track. Baklava Express is a New York City–based cross-cultural fusion project led by award-winning composer and oud player Josh Kaye. The ensemble performs original music shaped by a wide range of influences, from Ashkenazi and Mizrahi folk traditions to the broader Mediterranean musical heritage. Drawing on the diverse musical backgrounds of its members, Baklava Express has developed a sound that is both distinctive and defiantly genre-fluid
Featuring Josh Kaye (oud/composition) alongside Daisy Castro (violin), James Robbins (bass), and Jeremy Smith (percussion), the ensemble delivers a richly textured concert experience driven by interplay, momentum, and musical experience.
The band has been featured at major events, including the Brooklyn International Music Festival, the Greek Jewish Festival, and the Nyack Jazz Festival, and their music appears on the soundtrack of the short animated film Ariel by Conor Mcfinn.&nbsp;Baklava Express released their debut album Dávka in 2023, with their upcoming album Sababa scheduled for release in 2026.

Hattem is an American historian, with interests in early America, the American Revolution, and historical memory. He received his PhD in History at Yale University and has taught at The New School and Knox College. He is the author of&nbsp;The Memory of ’76: The Revolution in American History&nbsp;(Yale University Press, 2024), which was a finalist for the 2025 George Washington Prize, and&nbsp;Past and Prologue: Politics and Memory in the American Revolution&nbsp;(Yale University Press, 2020).
Hattem’s work has been featured or mentioned in&nbsp;The New York Times,&nbsp;TIME&nbsp;magazine,&nbsp;The Smithsonian Magazine,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Washington Post, as well as many other mainstream media publications and outlets. He has served as a historical consultant or contributor for a number of projects and organizations, curated historical exhibitions, appeared in television documentaries, and authenticated and written catalogue essays for historical document auctions. He is currently the Associate Director of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute.This event is part of Past, Present, and Pages, a program initiative developed by the Trumbull Library in celebration of America's 250. These programs explore history, literature, music, art, and community stories, highlighting the people, ideas, and events that connect the past to the present. New Haven Ballet Presents The Sleeping Beauty at the Shubert Theatre
This spring, New Haven Ballet invites audiences across Greater New Haven to experience the magic of classical ballet with The Sleeping Beauty, coming to the historic Shubert Theatre on Saturday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m.
Perfect for young audiences and longtime dance lovers alike, this enchanting production brings Princess Aurora’s beloved story to life through storybook magic and the sweeping score of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Thoughtfully adapted for today’s audiences, the performance offers a welcoming introduction to ballet while keeping all the beauty and wonder that has made this fairytale a classic for generations.
The heart of this production is the dancers themselves.
Students ages 4 to 18 will take the stage after months of dedication and artistic growth, sharing a performance that celebrates not only technique, but creativity, confidence, and joy. For many young performers, it’s a meaningful milestone and a chance to experience the excitement of live theater together.
For more than 40 years, New Haven Ballet has helped young dancers grow both on and off the stage, with many students continuing on to prestigious summer intensives, conservatories, and professional dance careers.
In addition to The Sleeping Beauty, the program will feature contemporary and Broadway inspired works, along with performances by the School’s Shared Ability artists. Together, the pieces reflect New Haven Ballet’s commitment to creating a space where every dancer can learn, grow, and shine.
Artistic Director Lisa Kim shares, “This performance is a chance for our students to come together and share what they have been working toward all year. We hope it inspires everyone in the audience.”
Following the performance, children and families are invited to meet the fairies from the ballet, a magical moment younger audience members won’t soon forget.
With a running time of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission, the performance is ideal for both first time balletgoers and devoted fans of dance.
