This public reading is not like any other; those present are encouraged to read a marked passage from the Declaration so "We the People" can all participate. Prior to the reading, a brief history of significant events of past years, including those leading up to the creation of the Declaration are recounted, so it is different every year. Special 250th Declarations are available to read from this year, so all can take turns in reading aloud this important founding document (don't forget your reading glasses!). Please share your experience at this public reading with others who did not attend - and the reason why it is called Independence Day. This event takes about 30 minutes or less, but it may be the most important 30 minutes of the day. Then you can go to your cookouts, parades, and fireworks knowing why it has been such a great American holiday for 250 years.Remember, every country has a 4th of July, but only in America is it Independence Day.

Chase-Cory House

The early 18th century dwelling, headquarters of the Tiverton Historical Society, with its early outbuildings, is open with tours Sundays from 2 to 4:30 PM for the summer season. The Society's collection of early American antiques and furnishings are displayed in restored period rooms, as well as documents and artifacts from Tiverton's rich past. This season, special displays have been set up celebrating our country's semiquincentennial: a silk flag flown by George Washington's RI Infantry, a rare printing of the Declaration of Independence, a map of the 1778 Battle of RI showing redoubts and troop movements, a surveyor's chart of Narragansett Bay and environs of July 1776, Civil War uniforms, and more.











Outbuildings include the wash house, corn crib, and outhouse. The entrance is through the museum shop where historical books, Weetamoo Woods guide books, Tiverton mugs and ornaments, Tiverton Revolutionary militia placemats, copies of early Tiverton maps, Tiverton Bank bookmarks, and other items may be purchased.The Chace-Cory House is located at 3908 Main Road, over the wall from Gray's Ice Cream at Tiverton Four Corners, and is open from 2-4:30 PM Sundays, June 7-Sept. 6 or by appointment. There is a preservation donation for non-members: $3 non-members, $2&nbsp; seniors (55+ yrs), members and children 12 years and younger free.
