SILENT VOICES UNITED INC. TO EXPAND READQUEST FREE BOOK PROGRAM IN SEPTEMBER 2026
Expanded initiative will distribute thousands of brand-new books and help organizations establish free community libraries
NEW YORK, NY — Silent Voices United Inc. will expand its ReadQuest Free Book Program in September 2026, providing thousands of brand-new books to children, families, seniors and underserved communities throughout New York City and beyond. The initiative will also assist organizations interested in establishing or expanding free libraries.
Led by Executive Director Tiffany Fulton, ReadQuest will serve childcare centers, schools, youth programs, senior centers, hospitals, clinics, prisons, halfway houses, nonprofits and other community organizations. Participating groups may receive brand-new books at no cost for distribution to the people they serve.
“Books educate, inspire and open doors to new possibilities,” said Fulton. “Our mission is to make sure they reach the communities that need them most. Every book represents knowledge, hope and an opportunity for a brighter future.”
Fulton continues to go above and beyond to uplift, enrich and empower the community. Her hands-on leadership includes securing book donations, building partnerships, coordinating transportation, recruiting volunteers and helping organizations develop accessible literacy resources.
Beginning in September, ReadQuest Community Book Fairs will be held Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Center for Community Enrichment at Canaan Baptist Church of Christ, 125 West 115th Street in Harlem. Selections will include children’s books, fiction, nonfiction, history, business, cookbooks, fantasy, thrillers, puzzles, arts and crafts, and more. All books will be brand new and free of charge.
Volunteers are needed Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to sort, organize and pack books. Individuals, families, students, community groups and organizations are welcome.
ReadQuest is supported by Canaan Baptist Church of Christ, which provides space for book storage and distribution; CMS, which assists with transportation; and major publishing partners that donate brand-new books.
Organizations interested in receiving books or starting a free community library may apply through Silent Voices United Inc. ReadQuest distributes brand-new books only and does not accept used-book donations. All books must be given away and may not be sold.
Recipients are responsible for arranging pickup. Transportation or shipping may be available for a fee. Donations are encouraged to help cover storage, supplies, transportation and volunteer stipends.
“ReadQuest is more than a book giveaway,” Fulton added. “It is an investment in literacy, lifelong learning and stronger communities.”

Every dot is a real subway train. Eight hundred of them, give or take, form a small jazz combo (walking bass, piano, sax, vibes, brushes) that has been playing without pause for over a hundred years. On the platforms they are hot, screaming, full of complaint. This is the music inside the noise. The harmony moves through a slow chorus. A note is placed precisely where the train happens to be along its route. Rush hour fills the band with held tones; at 3 a.m. the silences grow longer. Whatever is playing now has not played before and will not play again. Share your location and the trains nearest you grow louder. The piece rearranges itself around your body. You are listening to a portrait of where you stand, played by the city you are standing in.
Joshua Wolk is a designer and engineer who leverages data to make art. Josh was recently featured in the New York Times for his avante garde melding of tech and music: "The New York City subway’s No. 1 line is an upright bass. The 7 is a vibraphone. Josh Wolk, a design engineer, assigned an instrument to every branch of the subway map and the result is <a href="https://www.trainjazz.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">surprisingly soothing jazz music</a>, given the comparatively cacophonous experience of actually riding the thing."

The Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York will celebrate America at 250 with a toast to Jay Medal honorees Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed, the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and award-winning Lincoln historian Harold Holzer.
The Jay Medal for Service was created in 2012 to recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless spirit of commitment to and engagement with their community mirroring the multifaceted contributions of John Jay and his descendants. These honorees have demonstrated through their life's work that our shared narratives as a country, complicated as they are, can be better illuminated through the highest caliber of ongoing scholarship and advocacy. Honorees are selected for their excellence in the fields of American history, environmental stewardship, social justice or civic engagement.
Joining the celebration will be Chief Judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, Honorable Rowan D. Wilson and historian and philanthropist Elihu Rose who will present the awards at JHC's annual Soirée. Special guests will include David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman, and Beverly Gage.
