The Fairfax Scam Jam unpacks two of the fastest‑growing threats: romance‑based investment schemes and cryptocurrency fraud. Scammers often initiate contact through friendly wrong‑number texts, dating apps, and social media, then spend weeks or months building trust. Once a relationship feels established, victims are encouraged to “invest” in cryptocurrency, gold, or foreign currency through fraudulent platforms operated by criminal organizations.
You’ll learn how these schemes operate step‑by‑step, the psychological tactics scammers use, and the financial and emotional devastation they leave behind. Presenters will share actionable tools for recognizing early warning signs, having preventative conversations with loved ones, reporting fraud, and recovering when possible. Whether you're new to digital safety or a seasoned advocate, this year’s Scam Jam will give you the knowledge you need to stay a step ahead of scammers.
The 9th Annual Fairfax Scam Jam is a community collaboration between AARP Virginia and the Fairfax County Silver Shield Anti-Scam Program.
Resource Fair exhibitors will be on hand until 1 p.m. Representatives from county, state and federal agencies will be available to answer your fraud and scam questions one-on-one.

Haven also provides education to the community about the needs of those who are grieving.
Since September 1976 Haven volunteers have helped individuals work through their grief, offering comfort and support by sharing insights, resources and techniques that encourage recovery and healing. Haven offers individual support to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Support is conducted by trained volunteers, not therapists. No cost to attend. We will be hand wrapping fiber to create an all-in-one loofa/washcloth. Each bar is individually hand wrapped using water and agitation to create a unique and interesting design.&nbsp;
Use in the shower or at your sink. Just wet and massage the fiber to create a wonderful lather and it’s ready to use. The fiber provides a very gentle exfoliant which feels great on your skin unlike the harsh loofa sponges.&nbsp;
In addition to the health benefits, these soaps are beautiful with very colorful designs. They make excellent and unusual gifts! You will take home 2 wrapped soaps but they’ll still be wet.&nbsp; USE: wet under water and gently rub over your skin.
Minimum Age: 9 Cost: $10.00.
