Fairfax Voters Now Know November Choices For Senate, Congress

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Even though votes continue to be counted in Tuesday's dual primary in Virginia, the Associated Press has projected winners in the U.S. Senate race, as well as the 8th and 10th Congressional District races.

With 39 percent of the votes counted, Bert Mizusawa was declared the GOP's candidate for U.S. Senate on the Nov. 3 ballot. He defeated challengers David E. Williams and Kim Farington. Mizusawa will face incumbent Senator Mark Warner (D) in November

Fairfax County voters saw different contests depending on which party's ballot they chose, as well as their congressional district.

In the Democratic primary, Virginians in the 8th District voted in the U.S. House of Representatives contest on the ballot. There was no Democratic primary in the 10th or 11th districts.

In the Republican primary, David Beckwith defeated Julia Anna Perry, Anthony L. Suttles and M. Sam Wong. He will go on to face incumbent Democrat Suhas Subramanyam in November.

U.S. Rep. Don Beyer was declared the victor in the 8th Congressional District race, defeating four other Democrats: Mo Seifeldein, Adam M. Dunigan, Michael Christian Duffin, and Lorena Thorne Bruner. Beyer will face Republican Tony Sabio in the general election for that district.

Beyer will go on to face Republican candidate Tony Sabio in the general election. Located just outside Washington, D.C., the 8th District is overwhelmingly blue. Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger won 80% of the vote there in last year’s election.

Beyer, who was first elected to Congress in 2014, served two terms as Virginia’s lieutenant governor in the 1990s, was his party’s nominee for governor in 1997 and later served as President Barack Obama’s ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

He campaigned as a tested leader, touting his work to protect federal workers, promote clean energy and regulate artificial intelligence. He had the support of Virginia’s Democratic political establishment and Democratic-aligned interest groups, while facing opponents who pitched themselves as anti-establishment, generational change agents.

Following his victory, Beyer released the following statement:

“With so much at stake for our community and our country at this moment, I am grateful to Northern Virginians for again making me their Democratic nominee to fight for Virginia’s 8th District. I will continue to do all I can to justify that sacred trust. I want to thank my primary opponents for their willingness to run and serve.

“Today Northern Virginians are beset by skyrocketing prices, attacks on many of our neighbors, and major threats to our democratic system. Rather than help Americans concerned about inflation, President Trump’s Republican allies are enabling his tariffs, supporting his disastrous war, slashing health care for working people, and turning a blind eye to some of the worst corruption ever seen in this country.

“Republicans do not have the courage to stand up to Trump. To fix this mess, we must win back control of Congress. I am throwing myself into that fight, working to elect Democrats across the country starting right here in Virginia, and doing all we can to restore sanity and decency. We will win this struggle, but it will not be easy. Let’s get to work.”
