“I Was Screaming”: Springfield Man Wins $561K Lottery Prize

SPRINGFIELD, VA — A Springfield man had a loud reaction when he discovered he had won a Virginia Lottery prize worth $561,505.

“Of course, I was screaming and yelling,” the winner told Virginia Lottery officials.

The man won the prize while playing Western Wins, an online instant game featuring a progressive jackpot. The odds of winning any prize in the game are 1 in 3.86 per play, according to the Virginia Lottery.

The winner chose to remain anonymous. Virginia law allows lottery winners to claim prizes without having their identities publicly disclosed.

Western Wins is among the online instant games available through the Virginia Lottery’s website and mobile app. Players who are at least 18 years old and physically located in Virginia can also buy tickets online for Powerball, Mega Millions, Millionaire for Life, Cash 5 with EZ Match, Pick 3, Pick 4 and Pick 5.

Virginia Lottery profits support K-12 public education across the state. Fairfax County received more than $54.1 million in lottery funding for public education during the last fiscal year.

The lottery generated more than $914 million for Virginia’s K-12 schools in fiscal year 2026, accounting for approximately 10 percent of the state’s total public school budget.
