Why is the Village punishing residents who rent?

In 2024, the Village released a “Potential Affordable Housing Sites” study identifying 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀—𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲-𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗱. The map below is from the study.

Despite these options, the Village is advancing a site that causes the 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: the North Oakland Parking District (#3 on the map).

This is Shorewood’s 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮, and it already suffers from a chronic parking shortage. The proposal would eliminate 𝟰𝟵 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀, in addition to the 𝟯𝟮𝟬 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱. The impact would fall directly on the 542 residents who live in the district.

What’s most troubling is that, even with 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 identified in the study, the location chosen is one that places the heaviest burden on existing renters and reduces their quality of life.
We should be working to 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺, not make everyday life more difficult for them.
