📰 News we're reading

• House Finance Moves Gasline Bill Out of Committee (mustreadalaska.com) — Ketchikan residents are represented on a key committee that just advanced a major Alaska LNG gasline bill with unanimous support, moving it to the House floor. The measure is pitched as a statewide economic and jobs boost, with Gov. Dunleavy praising its potential long-term benefits for Alaskans, including communities like Ketchikan that rely on a strong state economy.

• Republican lawmakers send Roadless Rule repeal to U.S. Senate (ktoo.org) — A push in Congress to repeal the federal Roadless Rule could affect projects in the Tongass, including the Whitman Lake hydroelectric project near Ketchikan. While Sen. Murkowski argues repeal would ease access for renewable energy, conservation advocates say existing rules already allow hydropower, citing Whitman Lake and Sitka’s Blue Lake as proof that such projects can move forward now.

• Federal lawsuit alleges wrongful prosecution following mishandled Metlakatla police investigation (krbd.org) — A former Metlakatla resident has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit after a Ketchikan Superior Court judge dismissed his murder case, citing severe misconduct by Metlakatla police and no hope of a fair trial. The suit claims a mishandled investigation, destroyed or falsified evidence, and lasting harm including eviction from the Annette Islands Reserve, with all allegations now set to be tested in court.
