• U.S. Coast Guard Names Kodiak, Seward as Homeports for New Arctic Security Cutters (gcaptain.com) — Kodiak has been chosen to homeport the first two of the Coast Guard’s new Arctic Security Cutters, bringing major federal investment in housing, infrastructure, and long-term operations to the island starting in 2028. The move positions Kodiak at the center of U.S. Arctic security and icebreaking efforts, with expanded crews, support facilities, and national attention on the community’s strategic role in the far north.

• Kodiak waters could be offering gray whales a rare lifeline (kmxt.org) — Kodiak’s nearby waters, especially around Pasagshak Bay, are drawing unusually large numbers of gray whales and may be one of the few places where the struggling species is still finding enough food. Local tribal and federal scientists say whales here appear healthier than in many other regions, suggesting Kodiak could be a rare bright spot amid widespread strandings and population declines.
