Phoenix Fire Department Looking For New Recruits, Applications Now Open

PHOENIX, AZ — Dreaming of becoming a Phoenix firefighter? The Phoenix Fire Department has opened applications for its next class of firefighter recruits.

The application period opened July 20 and runs through Aug. 6. Applicants will also need to complete an online test, which is available through Aug. 10.

The firefighter recruit position is the department's entry-level role. Recruits are paid while attending the Phoenix Fire Training Academy and, after successfully completing the program, are promoted to firefighter and begin a probationary assignment in the field.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old by the time they are hired and have a valid Arizona Class D driver's license. Candidates must also obtain a valid Candidate Physical Agility Test, Arizona or National Registry EMT certification and a current CPR card before the second interview.

The hiring process includes an online written exam, oral board interviews, a background investigation, a medical examination, a driver's license review and a pre-employment drug screening.

The department noted that Firefighter I and II certifications are not required to apply.

Phoenix firefighters work 24-hour shifts on rotating A, B and C schedules. While firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies, the department said most calls involve medical emergencies.

Applications are being accepted online through the City of Phoenix's employment website. The department is also encouraging prospective applicants to review the study guide and complete a practice test before taking the online exam.
