📰 News we're reading

1. TUSD property tax bills reflect new, voter-approved school override (kgun9.com) — Tucson Unified School District property owners are now seeing a new override charge on their tax bills after voters approved Proposition 414, adding about $98 per $100,000 of home value. The seven-year measure will bring roughly $45 million annually for teacher raises, counselors, social workers, arts, PE, and academic support programs across TUSD schools.

2. Strauss Manor marks 20 years of affordable housing for low-income seniors on Tucson's east side (kgun9.com) — Affordable senior housing at Strauss Manor on Tucson's east side is marking 20 years of giving low-income residents stable, subsidized apartments through the city's Housing & Community Development program and federal support. With tens of thousands in Tucson needing affordable housing, residents say finally getting a unit there has eased financial stress and created a strong, supportive community.

3. Young Leaders Find Community, Friendship, Purpose at JPSA Retreats (azjewishpost.com) — Young Jewish leaders with deep ties to Tucson are finding new friendships, purpose, and leadership skills through retreats run by Jewish Philanthropies of Southern Arizona's Young Women's Cabinet and Young Men's Group. Participants describe intimate discussions, casual bonding, and exercises on how they'd fund local causes, all helping them feel more rooted in Tucson's Jewish community and ready to give back.

4. Faculty and students at Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind reflect on the start to its first semester at new campus (azpm.org) — Families connected to Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind are adjusting as the Tucson-area campus relocates from its historic Speedway site to the former Copper Creek Elementary in Oro Valley. Staff and students describe longer commutes, new classroom layouts, and expanded programs, while school leaders emphasize continued services at Tucson cooperative sites and across Arizona.

5. Tucson teachers oppose Proposition 320 (kold.com) — Tucson teachers and parents are pushing back against Proposition 320, warning its 60% classroom-spending mandate could drain money from special education, aides, food service, and bus drivers in local districts. Supporters like the Goldwater Institute argue it would prioritize teacher pay, while every Pima County district would need to overhaul its budget if voters approve the measure.
