• Court documents detail drug charges against teacher (yumasun.com subscription) — A Somerton Middle School teacher from Yuma faces multiple drug-related charges after a staff member reportedly found methamphetamine in a makeup bag on campus earlier this month. Deputies say no students were involved, but prosecutors allege the drugs and paraphernalia created a risk that children could have accessed them. The teacher's arraignment is scheduled for August 24.
   

• Rental scams on the rise in rural Arizona, Yuma police warn (azfamily.com) — Yuma police are warning residents that sophisticated rental scams are now targeting people moving to or living in Yuma, especially seniors and newcomers, by copying real listings and demanding money upfront. Local realtors urge renters to be suspicious of unusually low prices, pressure to pay via apps, and landlords who refuse to meet in person, and advise scam victims to contact authorities and credit agencies immediately.
   

• YCAPS awards record $70,000 in scholarships to Local Agriculture Students (kyma.com) — A Yuma-based scholarship fund is awarding a record $70,000 to 30 local students pursuing agriculture careers, many with ties to Yuma County farms and the UA Yuma Agricultural Center. The Yuma County Ag Producers Scholarship program, founded in 2007, has now granted hundreds of awards, helping students cover tuition, focus on their studies, and eventually bring advanced skills back to the region's ag industry.
