Stabbing Spree Leaves 1 Dead, 4 Injured In East Bay: Police

OAKLAND, CA — Police say they are investigating a stabbing spree in Oakland on Monday that left one person dead and four people wounded, including two in critical condition.

It's unclear what prompted the stabbings or whether the suspect knew any of the victims beforehand.

Officers believed they were responding to a report of a shooting inside Cesar Chavez Park in the 1800 block of 38th Avenue around 7:30 p.m., but instead found a person who had been stabbed, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Despite life-saving efforts, the victim died at the scene, police said. Police did not release their identity.

The suspect is then believed to have stabbed a second person 3at 8th Avenue and San Leandro Street and a third near Fruitvale BART Station, police said.

The suspect then followed up with two more stabbings near 39th Avenue and International Boulevard, police said.

All those victims were hospitalized — two in stable condition and two in critical condition, police said.

Officers eventually tracked down a suspect in the 1500 block of 39th Avenue after community members pointed them out, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody in connection with the stabbings. Their identity was not immediately released.
