Check out these spots (sanluisobispo.com) — Dog owners in Avila Beach can let their pets run off-leash on the main beach before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. daily, under voice control, according to the Port San Luis Harbor District. The guide also highlights Olde Port Beach along Avila Beach Drive and other SLO County dog parks and beaches where pups can safely explore and socialize. 
• The new California wine region you should know (spokesman.com) — A growing group of small winemakers is putting the SLO Coast wine region on the map, including a couple who recently bought Bassi Vineyard near Avila Beach after years of sourcing grapes there. Their focus on organic farming, coastal-influenced styles, and experimental techniques is drawing new attention to vineyards just inland from Avila’s shoreline.
