Got Compost? Get The Rich Gardening Material For Free In RivCo

BEAUMONT, CA — If gardening is up your alley, the Riverside County Department of Waste Resources has a special treat for you. Now, at two locations, that agency is offering free compost at the following locations:

  • Lamb Canyon Landfill, from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 16411 Lamb Canyon Road, in Beaumont.
  • Badlands Landfill, from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 31125 Ironwood Avenue, in Moreno Valley.

NOTE: Landfills close promptly at 4:30 pm; visitors must complete loading material and leave the site by 4:30 pm.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, composting is the process of recycling organic materials into an amendment that can enrich soil and plants. The rich element can be used as an additive to your garden soil, inspiring plant growth.

Composting is nature’s way of recycling," a USDA spokesperson said. It allows you to feed the soil without using chemical fertilizers.

Meanwhile, the landfills keep the food waste out of the landfills, and ultimately prevent greenhouse gas emissions.

When you go, please adhere to the landfill rules:

  • All visitors must check in at the Gate Fee Booth/Scale House before entering the landfill.
  • High-visibility safety vests and closed-toe shoes are required while visiting the landfill.
  • Visitors are required to bring their own tools, such as gloves, shovels, bags, and buckets, to collect compost.
  • Vehicle loads must be secured or covered in a manner which will prevent compost from falling, spilling, or blowing out while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Composted material is available on a first-come, first-served basis until the supply is exhausted.
