The Life-Changing Impacts of Food Recovery

Did you know that food waste sent to landfills is responsible for 58% of California’s methane emissions? You’re invited to a free program on Tuesday, March 10, where you can learn how to decrease these harmful emissions and provide meals to San Mateo County residents in need. Presented by the Citizens Environmental Council, this event will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Burlingame Community Center, 850 Burlingame Ave. in Burlingame. “The Life-Changing Impacts of Food Recovery” features Jack Steinmann, Resource Conservation Specialist with the San Mateo County Sustainability Department, and Maria Yap, founder and Executive Director of Peninsula Food Runners, which rescues surplus food and delivered more than 4 million meals to people in need during 2025.

Jack, who has been involved with food recovery since 2015, will explain how food waste impacts our county’s greenhouse gas emissions and what the county is doing to decrease those effects. Maria will tell the story of Peninsula Food Runners, which she launched in 2013, and how it is powered by the goodwill of volunteers and donors.
