• Man Pleads Guilty To Carlsbad DUI Crash That Killed Pedestrian (patch.com) — A driver has pleaded guilty to charges including gross vehicular manslaughter for a 2024 DUI crash in Carlsbad that killed 23-year-old pedestrian Karla Guillen on Las Palmas Drive. Prosecutors say he hit parked cars, struck Guillen as she exited her vehicle, then fled before being arrested on El Camino Real. He now faces up to nine years in state prison.
   

• California's El Nino emergency begins now as beaches erode (miamiherald.com) — Carlsbad officials are already working to stabilize crumbling coastal bluffs as El Niño-driven storms and higher sea levels begin chewing away at California beaches, with bigger waves expected by early October. State experts warn this winter could bring billions in flood and mudslide damage, so coastal residents, especially near bluffs and burn scars, are urged to prepare for potential road closures and extended isolation during heavy rains.
   

• Oceanside construction crew unearths 40 million-year-old fossils (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad sits atop some of California's richest fossil beds, including mammoth, bison, horse, turtle, and even a remarkably complete ankylosaur skeleton uncovered during past construction projects. A new Oceanside discovery of 40-million-year-old mammal bones is prompting fresh attention to this shared prehistoric landscape, with scientists preparing the fossils for study and future museum display while the city plans kid-friendly library programs.
