📰 News we're reading

1. Chainsaw Assault; Hatchet Attack; Indecent Exposure; Fatal E-Bike Crash: Carlsbad, San Diego County Crime Log (patch.com) — Carlsbad residents are highlighted in a countywide crime roundup that includes a phoned-in threat prompting a lockdown at Carlsbad High School and an indecent exposure arrest in North County. The log also covers a fatal e-bike crash, a chainsaw assault, and several other serious incidents across San Diego County, giving locals a snapshot of recent public safety concerns.

2. Severe erosion leaves Carlsbad's Tamarack beach slim for Labor Day weekend (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Severe erosion has stripped much of the sand from Tamarack State Beach in Carlsbad, forcing State Parks to close the popular parking lot just before Labor Day and leaving no timeline for reopening. City officials say they can't directly repair the state-run beach but are coordinating with state agencies and coastal engineers as high surf continues to reshape sand toward north Carlsbad and Oceanside.

3. Phoned-in threat prompts Carlsbad High lockdown (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad High School went into a precautionary lockdown for about five hours after a phoned-in threat on September 3, but police found no physical danger on campus. Officers methodically cleared each area, helped manage student release and traffic, and continue investigating the source of the call while officials updated families about pickups and after-school activities.

4. State ownership limits Carlsbad's control over beach maintenance (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad officials are explaining why the city can't directly fix erosion damage at Tamarack State Beach or replace a deteriorating welcome sign at Robert C. Frazee State Beach, since most of the coastline is controlled by California State Parks. The city manages only about one mile of beach, but is pressing state partners to repair the sign sooner and coordinating closely on erosion concerns.

5. Shelter Shepherd Who 'Doesn't Understand Why She's Behind Bars' Is Heartbroken After Losing Her Family (thestate.com) — A three-year-old, 109-pound Shepherd named Leeloo is waiting in a Carlsbad shelter after being surrendered by her previous family, leaving her confused and subdued behind kennel bars. Described as slow-moving, gentle, and very sweet, she's drawing online attention from a rescuer urging someone local to adopt her, while experts remind new owners to give surrendered dogs extra patience and space to adjust.
