• Man Sentenced For Deadly Castro Valley Marijuana Deal: Report (patch.com) — A San Leandro man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for a 2018 shooting that killed Joseph Gormley during a marijuana deal in Castro Valley near I-580 and I-238. Jurors convicted him of voluntary manslaughter, rejecting a murder charge, after conflicting accounts about whether the shooting was self-defense over a $20 drug sale.
• How nearly 2 million California homes must adjust landscaping under just-approved wildfire rule (fresnobee.com) — If you live in Castro Valley's higher East Bay hills, your home is in a newly targeted very high wildfire risk zone, and new state rules will soon change what you can keep within 5 feet of your house. Over the next five years, many residents must clear flammable materials, maintain vegetation, and eventually replace wooden fencing near structures as part of California's new Zone 0 defensible space standards.
