• Castro Valley hit-and-run crash kills 57-year-old pedestrian (ktvu.com) — A 57-year-old man was struck and killed Thursday afternoon while walking in a marked crosswalk at Somerset and Anita avenues in Castro Valley, and the driver fled the scene. CHP investigators say they've identified a possible vehicle and driver and are working to contact them, but have not confirmed whether speeding was involved. Authorities are still piecing together exactly what happened.
   

• Where to find a Spirit Halloween in the Bay Area this year (axios.com) — Castro Valley gets a fun shout-out this Halloween season as the birthplace of the very first Spirit Halloween store, which opened in 1983 inside a former local dress shop called Mallory's. This year, the chain has spread to 1,500 temporary locations, many filling vacant big-box spaces around the Bay Area. While San Francisco lacks a store, nearby suburbs are hosting several pop-up shops.
