The boy was released into the custody of a group facility in San Bernardino from which he reportedly ran away, Claremont police Sgt. Robert Ewing said.
The two were scheduled to appear separately in court Wednesday.
The two were arrested after police investigated a commercial burglary alarm that went off around 2:47 a.m. Tuesday at Euro Café in the 500 block of East Baseline Road, Ewing said.
Officers saw a person run away from the restaurant and get into the passenger seat of a black Jeep SUV, police said.
The officer attempted to block the Jeep with his cruiser, Ewing said. The Jeep slammed into the front of the cruiser and drove west on Baseline Road, he said.
The Jeep sped away, turned off its lights and drove eastbound on the Foothill Freeway near Fruit Street in La Verne on the wrong side of the road, police said. The officer did not pursue the Jeep, Ewing said.
A short time later, police found the Jeep after it collided with another car, Ewing said. Butler and the boy were found in nearby bushes and arrested.
No injuries were reported from the collision, Ewing said.
