📰 News we're reading

1. Fortress takes ownership of former Sony Pictures Animation campus in foreclosure sale (westsidetoday.com) — Culver City officials are weighing whether to buy the now-vacant former Sony Pictures Animation campus on Washington Boulevard after Fortress Investment Group took it over in a foreclosure sale. The 182,000-square-foot complex, valued at $71 million, could become a major city-controlled asset, with CBRE now marketing the site while local leaders explore their options.

2. LA's Camel Corps (laist.com subscription) — Long before freeways and film studios, Culver City's Camp Latham briefly hosted part of the U.S. Army's experimental Camel Corps, which tested whether camels could haul supplies across the West. The story traces how these hardy animals came to Los Angeles, why the military abandoned the idea, and what ultimately happened to the last California camels.

3. Swarm of 90 micro-quakes rattles residents in Lennox, Westmont (mercedsunstar.com) — A swarm of 90 tiny earthquakes shook Lennox and Westmont from Friday night into Saturday along the Newport–Inglewood Fault, which runs from Culver City to Newport Beach. Magnitudes stayed between 1.0 and 2.7, and USGS information notes such micro-quakes don't reliably predict a larger event, but they're a reminder for Culver City residents to stay earthquake-ready.

4. Ikea closes another key store after barely a year (thestreet.com) — Ikea's latest U.S. expansion plans include opening a new city-center store in Culver City, even as the company shuts several underperforming locations and refines its small-format strategy nationwide. The Swedish retailer is reallocating resources toward formats and partnerships it believes better fit American shopping habits, while still committing billions to grow its U.S. presence.
