In this increasingly digital world, many seniors inadvertently get left behind. This is where Valley resident, former TV and film production expert and now “Tech Wizard” Christopher Brown is lending a much-needed and timely hand.

After helping senior family and friends, Brown discovered that there was a real need for user-friendly tech support for seniors. Emphasis on “user-friendly”. With almost three decades of previous experience here in Los Angeles in music, tv and film post- production, his work with Disney, Sony Pictures, Apple and other major studios equipped him with a broad range of how-to tech knowledge.

“I found there was a real need for providing affordable, personal assistance to older adults and offer one-on-one technical advice or teaching based on that person’s individual needs,” he explained.

Brown says since starting his practice, he has received all kinds of questions from seniors ranging from the very basic to more complicated. He realized his background prepared him for a second career.

A 79-year-old woman in Burbank called him asking his assistance in helping her access the messaging on her cell phone. Another elderly man in Van Nuys needed Brown’s help getting his very outdated PC computer up to speed. A Valley Glen senior resident texted him an SOS for aid in dealing with a cranky printer.

“You name it – I’ve been asked to work on it from Apple and PC desktop computers, tablets, laptops, printers, shredders, Android and IOS smart phones, smart watches and appliances, Ring cameras, security systems, Alexa, smart home devices to TV’s and TV remotes or other electronic devices,” said Brown.

Brown explained that dealing with someone on an online chat or phone is not always ideal for seniors who may have trouble navigating the digital divide or may have some kind of impairment or special circumstance.

“Sometimes an in-person visit is the quickest, best way to take a look at the issue and offer hands-on guidance or advice,” he said.

Brown’s services, which he provides both onsite and by phone, include installing new devices or applications; resolving technical issues; repairing computer hardware and software and providing instructions for users on how to use devices most effectively.

Brown has since received five-star client reviews on Yelp, Google, NextDoor and Facebook from very happy seniors and their families:

“He was patient and kind even when my mom asked the same question multiple times. I couldn’t be there but was able to listen in on my mom’s Alexa. My mom was embarrassed that she couldn’t solve the problem herself but Chris’s playful demeanor put her at ease! He helped my mom when I couldn’t!”

“Chris happens to be really good with troubleshooting, setting up and repairing electronics. An all-around good human. I highly recommend him as someone who's trustworthy, talented and reliable.”

“I hired Christopher to help my mother, who is in her 80’s and lives alone. She reported that he was kind, patient and on time. He was able to fix some issues she was having with her TV, printer and shredder. He even taught her how to FaceTime her grandchildren and great- grandchildren and she was thrilled.”

Brown noted that “in this line of work, it is also important to be sensitive to memory issues and senior living situations so I provide discreet, patient support. I work with clients at whatever their level of experience.”

Because some seniors are on fixed income, he offers initial consultation at no cost so that clients can discuss specific needs and questions.

“I want seniors to feel happy and confident using their digital devices,” said Brown. “I make house calls by appointment as most seniors are more comfortable in their home or home office environment. I also try to address multiple issues in one session. I always try to consider the client’s level of familiarity and start conversations there. Whether it’s big or little, when you solve a very real problem and help raise someone’s confidence, it’s the best feeling in the world.”
