• Escondido Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Murder, DUI After Fatal Carlsbad Hit-And-Run (patch.com) — Escondido residents are learning that a 26-year-old man from their city was arrested on suspicion of murder and DUI after a fatal hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian in Carlsbad. Police say evidence, community tips, and license plate readers led them to the suspect's vehicle, and that he has a prior DUI conviction. Investigators continue to probe the crash, with alcohol suspected as a factor.
   

• First Methodist Church celebrates 140th anniversary (times-advocate.com) — First United Methodist Church of Escondido just marked 140 years of ministry with a weekend of celebrations at its longtime 4th and Kalmia home, drawing local officials, former pastors, and generations of members. The church showcased renovated spaces, launched a $100,000 matching campaign already met by a donor, and united its English and Spanish congregations for a joyful combined service.
   

• Update: Cougar Fire in San Diego County now brought under 100% containment (sacbee.com) — A wildfire that started July 5 on Cougar Pass Road in Escondido has been fully contained at 10 acres, meaning control lines now surround the burn area and it's no longer spreading. Firefighters will still monitor and work the interior, but residents can be reassured the Cougar Fire is not expected to grow beyond its current perimeter.
