Film Legend Omar Sharif Dies at 83

Omar Sharif famed for his iconic roles in "Dr. Zhivago" and "Lawrence of Arabia" died in a Cairo hospital.

Omar Sharif, the Egyptian-born actor best remembered for the blockbusters โ€œLawrence of Arabiaโ€ and โ€œDoctor Zhivago,โ€ died of a heart attack at a Cairo hospital today, Egyptian state television reported. He was 83.

Sharif, who a bridge champion, also suffered from Alzheimerโ€™s disease, his son, Tarek, reported in May

Born Michel Shalhoub in Alexandria on April 10, 1932, to a wealthy family in Alexandria, Sharif studied mathematics and physics at a university in Cairo -- the period when he is supposed to have become interested in acting. But he worked in his familyโ€™s timber business for years before landing a role in an Egyptian movie, โ€œThe Blazing Sun,โ€ in 1954 opposite Egyptian star Faten Hamama.

A Greek Catholic, Sharif converted to Islam and married Hamama in 1955. They divorced in 1974, and Sharif never remarried.

Sharifโ€™s work in โ€œLawrence of Arabiaโ€ earned him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. He appeared in several other films before starring in โ€œDoctor Zhivagoโ€ and later played a Jewish gambler in โ€œFunny Girlโ€ opposite Barbra Streisand.
