Newport Beach Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Murder After Leading Police On Chase

STANTON, CA — A Newport Beach man was arrested on suspicion of killing another man Thursday, Sept. 24 in Orange County after leading police on a chase that ended in a crash, authorities said.

Charles Matthew Swanson, 22, was booked on suspicion of murder Friday morning, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Orange County Sheriff's deputies received several 911 calls about a man with a knife chasing another man at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, authorities said in a statement.

Upon arrival, deputies found a man with serious injuries at Beach Boulevard and Chapman Avenue in Stanton.

The victim died at a hospital and was later identified as 45-year-old Joshua Lee Long, police said. His cause of death was not immediately released.

According to a statement released by the Orange County Sheriff's Department, witnesses gave deputies a description of the vehicle the possible suspect was seen traveling in.

Using license plate reader information, deputies found Swanson and tried to pull him over, but he fled and led police on a short chase that ended in Anaheim when Swanson rear-ended another vehicle, authorities said.
