Many lectures now run online while hands-on training stays in person, and new public art and continued improvements aim to strengthen this growing educational hub in West Fresno.
   

2. Abandoned Fresno house turns into firefighter training (yourcentralvalley.com) — If you saw heavy smoke over Fresno on Monday, it came from a rare live-fire training in an abandoned Tulare Street home, giving Fresno Fire recruits real-world experience under close supervision. The property's owner plans to replace the demolished house with 112 units of affordable senior housing, bringing new long-term benefits to local residents once construction moves forward.

Fresno farmer turns passion for legacy crops into community celebration (abc30.com) — A longtime Fresno farmer is inviting neighbors to celebrate legacy crops at the first Central Valley Blackeye Pea Festival and Cook-Off on October 3, next to Fresno City College's West Fresno Center. The free event will feature cooking contests and community gathering built around black-eyed peas, highlighting both local agriculture and the neighborhood's history on Fresno's west side.

Man is rushed to the hospital after being hit by a vehicle in Fresno, police say (yourcentralvalley.com) — A man in his early 40s is in critical condition after being struck by a westbound vehicle at Olive and Safford avenues in Fresno on Monday night, police say. Officers report the pedestrian stepped into the roadway, suffering serious head and facial injuries, while the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
   

5. Alaska Airlines 26-year-old Boeing 737 from Santa Ana declared an emergency and diverted (airlive.net) — An Alaska Airlines flight from Santa Ana to Seattle made an emergency diversion to Fresno Yosemite International Airport after a rapid 30,000-foot descent linked to a technical issue. The Boeing 737-700 landed safely on Runway 29L, and maintenance crews in Fresno are now examining the aircraft to pinpoint the cause before it returns to service.
