📰 News we're reading

• The Flock Backlash and Growing Revolt Against License Plate Surveillance (northdallasgazette.com) — Gilroy is part of a growing Santa Clara County coalition pushing back against automated license plate reader surveillance, alongside cities like San Jose and Palo Alto. Local organizers are using records requests, audits, rallies, and education to question how police and federal agencies might access residents' location data, especially for immigrants, and to pressure councils over Flock camera contracts.

• As ICE fears rise, San Jose expands detention facility freeze to public land (eastbaytimes.com) — San Jose has temporarily halted new detention facilities, including on public land, partly in response to a recently stalled ICE center project in nearby Gilroy. The 45-day moratorium gives city planners time to study health, safety, and infrastructure impacts while local and federal leaders clash over how much control cities have over immigration-related facilities in Santa Clara County.
