📰 News we're reading

• Gilroy enacts detention center moratorium after ICE fears (sanjosespotlight.com) — Gilroy's City Council has approved a 45-day moratorium on new detention facilities, responding to community concern over a planned ICE center just outside city limits. The pause lets staff study longer-term zoning changes while residents, local leaders, and law enforcement debate how best to balance safety, federal cooperation, and the city's stated opposition to expanded immigration detention nearby.

• Open Space Authority to conduct prescribed burn northwest of Gilroy (gilroydispatch.com) — A prescribed burn at Rancho Cañada del Oro in west Morgan Hill will send visible smoke northwest toward the Gilroy area later this month, but officials stress it's planned and not an emergency. The one- to two-day operation will reduce wildfire risk and may temporarily close parts of the preserve, with exact burn days announced the morning of ignition.

• Oakland Becomes Latest City In Bay Area To Enact Moratorium On New Data Centers (claycord.com) — Oakland has temporarily halted new data center approvals, joining Gilroy, San Francisco, Richmond and Oakley in pausing projects while they study impacts like heavy power and water use, noise and emissions. For Gilroy residents, it's another sign that regional leaders are rethinking how and where these energy-hungry facilities fit into local land use and environmental priorities.
