Suspect Killed By Resident After Breaking Into San Jacinto Home: Sheriff's Office

They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

SAN JACINTO, CA — A San Jacinto homeowner shot and killed an armed intruder, authorities said Saturday.

Deputies responded to the 1300 block of Heron Way at about 10:30 p.m. Friday to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department announced. They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide investigators said the owner of the home was visiting a neighboring residence when he heard screaming and the sound of gunfire coming from his home. The homeowner ran to his residence and saw an intruder inside armed with a shotgun, authorities said. The homeowner subsequently armed himself and confronted the suspect inside the residence, according to the sheriff's department.

During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly fired multiple rounds at the homeowner and the homeowner returned fire, striking the suspect.

No additional injuries were reported, and it was unclear if anyone was inside the home when the suspect allegedly broke in.

The homeowner was taken to the sheriff's San Jacinto station for further investigation, and the suspect's identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

No arrests were made, but the Riverside County District Attorney's Office was expected to review the case.
