Lafayette Considers Cancelling City Council Election

Three candidates qualified for three council seats, potentially allowing Lafayette officials to cancel the election.

LAMORINDA, CA — Lafayette could seat new city council candidates without putting their races before voters after exactly three candidates qualified for three available seats.

The Lafayette City Council will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday to decide whether to appoint the candidates or proceed with the election.

City Clerk Joanne Robbins on Aug. 13 certified that the number of qualified candidates does not exceed the number of offices up for election, according to a news release.

James Cervantes and Stella Wotherspoon qualified as candidates for two four-year City Council seats. Mario DiPrisco qualified for one two-year seat.

Because no additional candidates qualified before the nomination period ended, each candidate is running without an opponent.

The council's decision Thursday will determine whether Lafayette appoints Cervantes, Wotherspoon, and DiPrisco directly to the available seats or allows the uncontested races to continue to the ballot.

Residents can review the election notice, meeting agenda, and information about participating in or watching the meeting on the City of Lafayette's website.

The special meeting will take place at the Main City Offices, Conference Room 240, 3675 Mt. Diablo Blvd.
