Larkspur Seeks Public Input On City Hall Renovation Options

Residents can weigh in on plans costing up to $23.7 million to restore the historic building and address aging infrastructure.

LARKSPUR, CA — Officials are seeking public input on the future of Larkspur's 113-year-old City Hall as they consider renovation options ranging from $6.3 million to $23.7 million.

The city is weighing how to preserve the historic building at 400 Magnolia Ave. while addressing seismic deficiencies, an outdated fire sprinkler system and aging infrastructure, according to the city's renovation project webpage.

The decision could shape City Hall's use for decades, particularly as the Larkspur Library prepares to relocate to its new location on Rose Lane.

  • $6.3 million: Replace major building systems without extensive structural improvements, extending the building's use by approximately 10 years.
  • $21.8 million: Complete a major renovation with structural upgrades, extending the building's life by about 30 years.
  • $23.7 million: Undertake a comprehensive renovation that preserves the building's historic character and extends its life by at least 50 years.

The city has not allocated construction funding beyond the cost of preparing the study. Officials expect to discuss financing after gathering community feedback.

The report identifies the building's front facade, overall shape and roofline as historically significant features that should be considered during renovations.

City officials also warn that delaying major improvements could lead to building system failures and potentially force a partial or complete closure.

The City Hall Study Citizens' Committee will meet Wednesday at 4 p.m. to continue reviewing the building's future.

Residents can share their ideas through the City Hall Renovation Community Survey.

Additional project details and meeting information are available on the city's website.
