Marin County Lifts Burn Ban, But Restrictions Remain

Residents with valid permits can resume certain outdoor burning, but fire safety restrictions remain in place.

Marin County has lifted its seasonal burn permit suspension, allowing residents to resume certain outdoor burning with proper permits.

The suspension ended Sunday amid cooler temperatures, higher humidity and the possibility of rain, according to a Marin County Fire Department news release.

Residents must obtain a California Inter-Agency Burn Permit and confirm burning is allowed that day. Additional fees may apply.

The county outlined several safety requirements:

  • Burn only dry, natural vegetation. Burning trash, painted wood and other debris is prohibited.
  • Avoid burning on windy days.
  • Keep burn piles no larger than 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall.
  • Clear a 10-foot area around burn piles down to bare soil.
  • Keep a shovel and water source nearby.
  • Have an adult supervise the fire at all times.

The department said controlled burning of dead and dry vegetation can help reduce wildfire hazards.
