• California Deputy Steven Romero Faces Felony Child Abuse Charge After Prosecutors Say He Choked His 5-Year-Old Son Over a Slow Breakfast in Livermore (centralrecorder.com) — A San Mateo County sheriff's deputy living in Livermore is charged with felony child abuse after prosecutors say he choked his 5-year-old son during a March breakfast dispute at their Livermore home. Alameda County prosecutors allege the boy needed hospital care for bruising, while neighbors describe the father as a friendly family man. A key pretrial hearing is set for Sept. 15.
   

• Alcohol Giant Pays $12.5M In Bribery Scandal That Exposed Corruption On Livermore Grocery Shelves (patch.com) — Federal prosecutors say Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits will pay $12.5 million after a bribery scheme that influenced what alcohol appeared on grocery shelves in Livermore and other California cities. Executives and employees allegedly funneled luxury trips, cash, and gifts to grocery-chain staff in exchange for prime shelf space, with several California-based officials and a Livermore resident among those charged.
   

• Julie Makinen named Embarcadero Media Foundation publisher and CEO (danvillesanramon.com) — Leadership at Embarcadero Media Foundation, which publishes Livermore Vine, is changing as veteran editor Julie Makinen becomes CEO and publisher in October. She'll oversee all operations for the company's seven Bay Area outlets, including Livermore's local news site, with a focus on strengthening nonprofit local journalism and deepening community engagement across the region.
