Black History Month 'For The Culture' Kicks Off In Long Beach

The Long Beach Public Library is hosting an inclusive month-long celebration of Black History Month to showcase history and culture.

LONG BEACH, CA — As part of Long Beach's celebration of Black History Month, the city's libraries will host events all month to showcase the richness of Black history and culture.

The month-long celebration theme is "For the Culture," putting as spotlight on Black love, self-identity, self-care, art and joy. As the month progresses, there will be more family-friendly event, including interactive story times, workshops and games.

“Black History Month is a vital opportunity to honor the achievements and contributions of Black Americans,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “This celebration is not just about recognizing history but also fostering unity and embracing the vibrancy of our diverse community.”

The celebration will kick off with a two-day event on Feb. 7 in collaboration with the Forgotten Images and African American Cultural Center of Long Beach. Festivities will start at 6 p.m. at the African American Cultural Center at 4321 Atlantic Avenue.

On Friday, guests will enjoy live music and local vendors offering unique products. On Saturday, there will be a fashion show, a children's corner and family portraits.

“At the Long Beach Public Library, we believe in the power of stories to connect and inspire,” said Library Director Cathy De Leon. “Through these celebrations, we hope to provide a space where the community can come together to learn, celebrate, and uplift one another.”
