Overnight Closures Coming To Major SoCal Freeway: What Long Beach Drivers Should Know
Lane, ramp and connector closures are planned for several nights as Caltrans works on a $34 million rehabilitation project.
LONG BEACH, CA — Drivers traveling on the 91 Freeway through Long Beach and neighboring communities could face delays next week as Caltrans plans a series of overnight lane, ramp and connector closures. Several freeway connectors may also close during the work, including connections between SR-91 and the 110 and 605 freeways.
The closures are scheduled to begin Monday night, Aug. 24, and continue through Saturday morning, Aug. 29, as crews perform work on a $34 million sign rehabilitation project along a 14.7-mile stretch of State Route 91 between Gardena and Cerritos.
Caltrans said eastbound and westbound SR-91 will each be reduced to two lanes along portions of the freeway overnight, while several ramps and freeway connectors may also be temporarily closed.

For Long Beach-area drivers, the work includes closures affecting Long Beach Boulevard, Atlantic Avenue and Cherry Avenue, along with portions of the freeway between Interstate 710 and Interstate 605.
From Monday night through Friday morning, up to three eastbound lanes will close between Vermont Avenue and I-710 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., while up to three lanes between I-710 and I-605 will close from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

On the westbound side, up to three lanes between Atlantic Avenue and Vermont Avenue will close from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., while up to three lanes between I-605 and Atlantic Avenue will close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The schedule changes Friday night, when some closures will remain in effect later Saturday morning. Eastbound closures between Vermont Avenue and I-710, for example, are scheduled from 8 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday.
Caltrans warned there could be rolling overnight full closures of connectors and ramps as crews move between locations. Detour routes will be marked.
Long Beach Boulevard is among the ramps most consistently affected. Its eastbound and westbound SR-91 on-ramps and off-ramps may be closed overnight during the work.
Other potentially affected ramps include Cherry Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Paramount Boulevard, Main Street, Avalon Boulevard, Downey Avenue, Santa Fe Avenue and Alameda Street/Santa Fe Avenue.
Caltrans said motorists should allow extra travel time and use caution through the construction area. Current highway conditions and closures are available through Caltrans QuickMap.
The work is part of a $34 million project to rehabilitate and upgrade roadside and overhead signs and lighting, restore highway planting, replace guardrails and make worker safety improvements along 14.7 miles of SR-91 in Los Angeles County.
The project is expected to be completed in summer 2029. More information about the work and project notifications is available on the Caltrans SR-91 Sign Rehabilitation Project page.
