📰 News we're reading

1. 3 Women Were Shot In Long Beach. Days Later, One Died (patch.com) — Long Beach residents are being urged to share any information after a 56-year-old local woman died from injuries suffered in a shooting that wounded three women on East Pacific Coast Highway. Police say the attack in a parking lot does not appear random, and homicide detectives are continuing to investigate while asking the community for tips.

2. Overnight Closures Coming To Major SoCal Freeway: What Long Beach Drivers Should Know (patch.com) — If you drive the 91 through Long Beach, expect major overnight lane and ramp closures between August 24 and 29, especially near Long Beach Boulevard, Atlantic Avenue and Cherry Avenue. Caltrans will reduce lanes and intermittently close connectors while upgrading signs, lighting and safety features along a 14.7‑mile stretch, so plan extra travel time and watch for detours.

3. A broken mental health system has kept a Long Beach father locked up without a trial, his family says (lbpost.com) — A Long Beach father with schizophrenia has spent a year in a state mental hospital after a dumpster fire arrest, with no trial yet and his family fearing he may never contest the charge. Relatives, local Filipino groups, and supporters are rallying in Long Beach and at court hearings, arguing the county's mental health and justice systems are trapping him in deteriorating conditions.

4. LBCC to construct first student housing complex, hundreds of on-campus apartments (presstelegram.com) — Long Beach City College is building its first-ever on-campus housing complex at Clark Avenue and Lew Davis Street, adding 431 beds and extensive student amenities. Funded by local bond measures, the project aims to ease student housing instability, minimize impacts on nearby neighborhoods, and will break ground at a public ceremony on October 8, with completion expected in 2028.

5. 'Postcard From Heaven': California Man Receives Letter Sent by His Late Parents 26 Years Ago (mycharisma.com) — A Long Beach man was stunned when a postcard his late parents mailed from Copenhagen in 2000 finally arrived at his home this month, years after both had died. The long-delayed note, likely misplaced in the postal system, gave him an unexpected and emotional connection to the goodbye he never got during COVID.
