1. 6 People Killed On Long Beach Roads In 18 Days (patch.com) — Long Beach residents are confronting a deadly month on local streets, with six people killed in crashes between Sept. 4 and 21, including pedestrians, a bicyclist, a motorcyclist and a man using a wheelchair. City officials are rolling out major safety upgrades on Pacific Avenue and launching automated speed enforcement this fall as Long Beach reaches its 2026 Vision Zero deadline to end severe traffic injuries and deaths.
   

2. Man Arrested In Fatal Shooting Of Woman In Long Beach (patch.com) — Long Beach police have arrested 46-year-old resident Cedric Frank Barnes on suspicion of murdering 31-year-old Madison Coldiron during an early-morning sidewalk argument on Long Beach Boulevard. Detectives say the two did not know each other before the encounter, and the case is now with prosecutors for filing consideration as investigators continue seeking tips from the public.
   

3. Long Beach artists, storytellers bring local history to life, celebrate America's 250th anniversary (presstelegram.com) — Long Beach residents just wrapped up "Seeds of Resilience," a free Civic Center Plaza celebration highlighting the city's diverse histories alongside America's 250th anniversary. Local artists, cultural groups, schools, libraries, and museums shared performances, exhibits, and storytelling that honored Indigenous roots, immigrant communities, and neighborhood traditions, inviting attendees to add their own memories of what Long Beach means to them.
   

4. City homeless shelter to get showers, air conditioning, more space in $8.6 million overhaul (lbpost.com) — Long Beach is investing $8.6 million to expand and modernize its year-round homeless shelter on West Anaheim Street, boosting capacity from 85 to 126 beds and adding long-needed showers, air conditioning and family space. During construction, people will be temporarily housed at a Spring Street warehouse, and residents needing shelter must still first get referrals through the city's Multi-Service Center.
   

5. Long Beach reports first West Nile virus-related death since 2017 (nbclosangeles.com) — Long Beach has recorded its first West Nile virus-related death since 2017, with 41 local cases so far this year and most involving serious neuroinvasive illness. Health officials urge residents to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, fix window screens and eliminate standing water around homes as mosquito season intensifies across the city and county.
