CSULB Residence Hall Misses Move-In Date (beachcomber.news) — CSULB's new La Playa Hall dorm isn't ready for its planned August 23 move-in, leaving hundreds of students temporarily housed in nearby hotels while construction and inspections wrap up. The university is running shuttles to campus, refunding housing charges for the delay period, and says these interim arrangements should last roughly a week before students can move into their Long Beach rooms.
   

2. Parks Dept. warns of less programming, fewer jobs for youth due to budget cuts (sigtrib.com) — Long Beach's Parks, Recreation and Marine Department is proposing $2.8 million in 2027 budget cuts that could shrink park programs, youth jobs, after-school offerings, and even Animal Care Services as soon as October. Officials outline possible closures, reduced hours, and staff layoffs, while the mayor's draft recommendations would restore some programs and positions but are not yet final.
   

3. Summertime 'Escrow Indians' (beachcomber.news) — Long Beach's early land boom drew so-called "Escrow Indians," aggressive speculators who pushed dubious real estate deals on new arrivals. This history traces how local agents and civic leaders responded by forming the Real Estate Exchange, which evolved into today's Long Beach Board of Realtors and helped shape California's first real estate licensing laws.
   

4. Memories of Vets Stadium (beachcomber.news) — Long Beach Veterans Memorial Stadium's rich history includes Fourth of July fireworks, film shoots like Bette Midler's "The Rose," and the birth of the Long Beach Blues Festival. The story also recalls Mother Teresa's 1986 visit, Long Beach State's George Allen era, and the stadium's role for Poly, LBCC and CSULB football as demolition looms.
   

5. California aquarium takes in at least 500 animals rescued from wildlife traffickers (miamiherald.com) — Right now in Long Beach, the Aquarium of the Pacific is caring for about 500 animals rescued from a wildlife‑trafficking bust, on top of its usual 12,000 residents. Staff are stabilizing sharks, fish, and invertebrates in quarantine, and the aquarium is urging locals to buy pets only from reputable, traceable sources to help fight trafficking.
