More Than 100 Earthquakes Rattle LA County In Days, With Another Thursday Afternoon

LOS ANGELES, CA — A magnitude 3.1 earthquake epicentered near Compton jolted Southern California Thursday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake occurred in roughly the same area as a swarm of over 100 small earthquakes that hit over the weekend.

Thursday's earthquake hit at 1:32 p.m. and was centered about 2.5 miles south southeast of Compton, according to the USGS.

No injuries or damages were reported.

Officials did not immediately identify the fault line responsible for Thursday's quake, but the epicenter was near the Newport-Inglewood fault, which runs from Culver City to Newport Beach.

The quakes over the weekend were also clustered around that fault, according to seismologist Lucy Jones.

"A similar swarm occurred at another offset in 2021. Part of the gradual coalescing of a fault over hundreds of thousands of years," Jones wrote.

The Newport-Inglewood fault ruptured in 1933, killing 120 people.

A 2017 study found that the fault could be more dangerous than previously believed. Evidence shows that ancient earthquakes there may have been as strong as magnitude 7.5, shaking Seal Beach so hard that it sank a chunk of the coast multiple feet, according to the Los Angeles Times.
