More Overnight Street Takeovers Include Burglary In South LA

LOS ANGELES, CA — One person was arrested Sunday at a grocery store that was burglarized by several people during a street takeover in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

Officers were initially dispatched at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday to a reported burglary in the 300 block of Manchester Avenue, just west of Avalon Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Division.

They arrived to see a street takeover in progress and several individuals "breaking into a location." Multiple media reports indicated that the location was Superior Grocers at 310 E. Manchester Ave.

Several people fled the scene, but officers were able to take one person into custody, police said.

It was not the only illegal street takeover that took place overnight. According to KTLA5, takeovers also occurred in Downey at Florence Avenue and Lakewood Boulevard, and in the Gramercy Park area of Los Angeles at Century Boulevard and Western Avenue.

Those takeovers could not be immediately confirmed by authorities.

A number of businesses have been targeted by burglars during street takeovers this summer, including an AutoZone in East Los Angeles that was hit multiple times.

Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson stood in front of the ransacked Superior Grocers store on Sunday and called for the creation of a joint LAPD and community alert task force to combat the crimes.

"The continued looting of name stores in predominantly low-income Black and Hispanic communities increases the odds that name stores will not locate and serve these communities," Hutchinson said. "That's a major loss."
