1. John T. Moss (losaltosonline.com) — Los Altos is mourning former mayor and longtime civic leader John T. Moss, who died August 7 at age 84. Moss served on the Los Altos City Council and School Board, led the Rotary Club, and helped host beloved Fourth of July celebrations at Shoup Park. He and his family were deeply involved in local schools, business groups, and community life for decades.

2. Football is back (losaltosonline.com) — Local football fans can head to Los Altos High Friday night as the Eagles host Homestead at 7 p.m. in their season opener, aiming for a stronger run in the PAL El Camino 'C' Division. Mountain View also opens at home against Capuchino, while St. Francis welcomes Manteca, giving South Bay fans several nearby options to kick off football season.

Yvonne Elsie Jacobson (née Olson) (losaltosonline.com) — Many in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills are remembering historian and author Yvonne Elsie Jacobson, who raised her family in Los Altos Hills and chronicled the Valley's shift from orchards to Silicon Valley. Her acclaimed works, including Passing Farms: Enduring Values, preserved local agricultural history, and she taught at several nearby colleges before a long battle with Alzheimer's.

4. San Jose landfill ordered to reduce air pollution and odors 'like rotten eggs and spoiled food' (pressdemocrat.com) — Los Altos trash is among the waste sent to Newby Island Landfill, which has just been ordered by Bay Area air regulators to sharply tighten monitoring and reduce foul odors and emissions. The San Jose-area dump, long criticized by Milpitas neighbors, must install continuous hydrogen sulfide monitoring, upgrade gas collection systems, and survey for methane leaks over the next two years.
