📰 News we're reading

1. Dangerous Surf, Rip Currents Threaten Malibu Beaches Over Labor Day Weekend (patch.com) — Malibu residents and visitors are being warned about dangerous surf, strong rip currents and possible coastal flooding over Labor Day weekend as Hurricane Marie sends large swells toward Southern California. Malibu is singled out as especially vulnerable, with waves up to 8 feet, high evening tides and potential beach erosion expected from Saturday through Tuesday. Officials urge beachgoers to consult lifeguards, avoid risky areas like rocks and piers, drive carefully on wet roads and heed water-quality warnings.

2. Pepperdine Celebrates Opening of New Golf Clubhouse (pepperdinewaves.com) — Pepperdine University has opened a new 8,000-square-foot Golf Clubhouse on its Malibu campus, giving men's and women's golf teams year-round training space and upgraded lounges, locker rooms, and technology. The facility, part of a $13 million investment, was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting tied to a Labor Day golf weekend in Malibu and honors numerous local donors and alumni.

3. California recognizes open-water lifeguards as first responders — The Malibu Times (malibutimes.com) — Malibu's ocean lifeguards, long seen locally as crucial emergency responders on the beach and along PCH, are now formally recognized by California as first responders. The change, driven partly by Malibu-based advocates, highlights their intensive training, medical responsibilities, and key role in major incidents, while laying groundwork for possible future improvements in benefits and protections.

4. Fraser Bohm's Murder Trial Is Delayed to December After Prosecutors Produced a Nitrous Tank Found on His Lap (thoughtcatalog.com) — A December 1, 2026 trial date is now set for Fraser Bohm, charged in the 2023 high-speed crash on Malibu's Pacific Coast Highway that killed four Pepperdine students. The delay follows prosecutors' late disclosure of a blood-smeared nitrous oxide tank from his car, while victims' families also pursue wrongful death suits against Bohm and multiple agencies including the City of Malibu.

5. LA County Prepares for Historic El Niño Storm Season (smdp.com) — Los Angeles County officials are ramping up preparations for a potentially historic El Niño season, warning that coastal flooding and erosion have already forced closures along Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu. Residents are urged to sign up for alerts, assess flood and mudflow risks, stock supplies, clear drains, and consider flood insurance well before heavy winter storms arrive.
